India suffered an injury to their skipper, Shubman Gill, who suffered from neck spasms and was hospitalized for the same. However, India have stumbled in the current series with a 30-run defeat in the first match at Eden Gardens.
After being discharged from hospital following the injury, he is unsure about participating in the second Test in Guwahati, which will be played on November 22. It would be a crucial opportunity for them to revive their WTC rankings.
India is out of sync with England and Australia’s split captaincy approach
The BCCI and the Indian management have been trying to elevate Gill as India’s emerging all-format skipper after he was appointed as Test and ODI captain for India. He is currently vice-captain in T20Is.
Shubman Gill was officially named India’s ODI skipper ahead of the Australia tour as he replaced former skipper Rohit Sharma. He could also be seen as India’s T20I skipper after Suryakumar Yadav, 35, is expected to see a leadership transition.
Other major countries such as England and Australia have embraced the ideology of splitting captains to manage workload and maintain clarity between formats. Gautam Gambhir, on the other hand, has argued that India do best under an all-format skipper.
“I don’t think Shubman Gill should be the captain of all formats,” opined Abhinav Mukund
Former Indian opener Abhinav Mukund has given his opinion on India’s growing fondness to hand Gill the all-format captaincy. However, he has reasoned that India would benefit more from a split leadership model.
Mukund played seven Tests for India and subsequently became a prominent voice in cricket broadcasting for India. He has acknowledged the Indian captain’s leadership qualities but has not yet floated the concept of shared captaincy.
“I think Shubman has what it takes to be an all-format captain, but I don’t think India should have an all-format captain anymore,” Mukund said on The Great Indian Cricket Show on Doordarshan.
“Split captaincy is a smart move. Shubman Gill has been given the responsibility of taking up the mantle in Tests and he will be under a lot of pressure,” he added.
“At home everyone expects India to win – no questions asked,” the former Indian cricketer said
He further pointed out that the ongoing series against South Africa could be considered one of Gill’s first challenges at home. India’s last home series against New Zealand ended in a 3-0 defeat, while they bounced back with a 2-0 win over the West Indies last month.
“This is a crucial series,” he said. “The England series was a big confidence booster for India. At home everyone expects India to win – no questions asked.”
Under Shubman Gill, India are currently fourth on the WTC points table, with 52 points in 8 matches and a PCT of almost 55. If they win the Guwahati Test, they could return to the third position, while South Africa would once again drop to number one. 4.
