Former Indian batsman Mohammad Kaif advised Shreyas Iyer to hang on with the Indian team as he consoled him by saying a national T20 call-up is around the corner. Shreyas Iyer has been picked only in the ODI format as of now.

Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer captained the Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024 and led them to their third title; he was subsequently bought by the Punjab Kings for a whopping 26.75 Crores. Shreyas led the Punjab Kings to their second IPL final after 11 years, since 2014, when they were defeated in the final.

Shreyas himself scored over 600 runs in the 2025 edition of the IPL; However, despite his stellar performances, he was not picked in the Indian squad for the 2025 Asia Cup and was also denied the opportunity to feature in the five-match T20I series against Australia.

Shreyas Iyer asked “Hang in there” by a former Indian batsman

Iyer emerged as India’s most likely batsman across all white-ball formats, and it is unclear why he is falling out of favor when it comes to the shortest format of the game. He was recently included in the ODI squad for the Australian tour but has not yet been allocated a spot in the T20I squad.

Former Indian batsman Mohammed Kaif has once again drawn everyone’s attention to the Punjab Kings skipper, calling his class across all formats. He talked about how Iyer started his Test career with a century on debut and his stellar campaign in the 2023 World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy for India.

“Great to catch up with Shreyas Iyer. What a player. Hundred on Test debut, 2023 ODI World Cup hero, only captain to lead three IPL teams to finals. National T20 call-up also coming. Hold on, a great future awaits you, Shreyas,” Kaif wrote on X.

Shreyas Iyer named Shubman Gill’s replacement for the Australia tour

For the upcoming series against Australia, no one can look past the fact that he has been denied another opportunity in the Indian T20I side; However, the good news is that Iyer has been announced as Shubman Gill’s replacement in the ODI team.

The new Indian ODI vice-captain recently captained India A in their unofficial three-match ODI series against Australia A. Iyer also scored a breathtaking hundred in the very first match alongside Priyansh Arya.

India’s next T20I series will take place at home against World Cup runners-up South Africa later in December. Shreyas Iyer may be eyeing a place in the team for the home games later this year.

Shreyas had sidelined himself in the longest format of the game

Recently, in the past month, Shreyas Iyer had written a letter to the BCCI requesting the board not to consider him for selection in the longest format of the game. After Karun Nair’s criticism, Iyer was likely on the Indian selectors’ radar for a Test comeback.

He was also named skipper of the India A red-ball team that played Australia A; however, the veteran batsman showed that his body is currently unable to bear the load of five-day matches.
