Indian middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer has parted ways with the Indian team and has decided to extend his stay in Australia to receive adequate treatment for the injury in his rib. Following the massive update, his participation in the South African series is being seriously questioned.

During India’s campaign against Australia in the three-match ODI tour, Shreyas Iyer emerged as one of the key forces in the Indian batting order. His 61 in the second match in Adelaide and a 118-run partnership alongside Rohit Sharma saved India from another humiliating collapse like Perth.

However, Shreyas suffered a serious blow to his chest as he ran backwards and jumped onto a ball, diving forward to make a stunning grab. His left ribs hit the ground bluntly and pain was all over his face.

Shreyas Iyer remains in Sydney but delays return to India after a serious injury

Although the updates had made it clear that Shreyas Iyer had no fractures as revealed by multiple scans performed on him after he was rushed to the hospital after leaving the ground in extreme pain. He did not get to bat for India as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli ended the chase with 9 wickets remaining.

Although there is no fracture, it would take several more days for him to be cleared by the Sydney hospital to travel and return to India, according to RevSportz. If Iyer reaches India, he is expected to report to the CoE soon and start his recovery and rehabilitation process under the watchful eyes of the BCCI medics.

Shreyas Iyer is not part of the Indian T20I squad against Australia

While Iyer is yet to arrive in India, the likes of Virat Kohli have already flown back to London, and Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul have returned to India. The remaining players, including skipper Shubman Gill, have joined the Indian T20I squad, which landed in Canberra on Saturday.

Suryakumar Yadav, the skipper, Jasprit Bumrah and Rinku Singh were among the players who arrived in the Australian capital on Saturday. Shreyas Iyer is not part of the Indian T20I squad as he is yet to make his comeback to the format.

Some well-known names like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Mohammed Siraj have also been left out of the T20I XI. The coaching and support staff also caught up with the rest of the team on Sunday.

If Shreyas misses the tour of South Africa, will it open the ODI comeback doors for Rishabh Pant?

After such a serious injury, Shreyas Iyer’s comeback window could be predicted in three to four weeks, although nothing has been officially revealed yet. Under such circumstances, Shreyas will be ruled out of the home ODI series against South Africa as his return before November 30 looks difficult.

Rishabh Pant, who once left his No. 4 spot ahead of Shreyas Iyer, could call this the perfect opportunity to make an ODI comeback. He is expected to return to international action with the South Africa Test series. The Indian selectors’ call will be highly anticipated until the squads for the match are announced.
