Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer has been hospitalized in Sydney after sustaining a spleen injury while playing during the third ODI against Australia on October 25.
Iyer was injured while attempting a catch at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The ball struck his lower left rib cage and he was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation.
Scans confirmed a rupture in his spleen, which caused internal bleeding. He was admitted to the ICU as a precaution, but has since moved. Doctors say he is in stable condition, although he continues to be closely monitored.
The BCCI released a statement saying, “Shreyas Iyer suffered an impact injury to his left lower rib cage area while playing in the third ODI against Australia in Sydney. Scans have revealed a laceration to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is maintaining his Injury status closely monitored. “
The Indian team doctor has remained in Sydney to monitor Iyer’s recovery and coordinate with local medical experts. His family is expected to join him soon after visa formalities are completed.
Although his condition is improving, there is no official timeline for his return to cricket. The selectors had recently considered Iyer for ODIs only, and his next possible assignment could be the three-match ODI series against South Africa, starting on November 30. However, his participation will depend entirely on medical clearance.
Meanwhile, the rest of the Indian squad has traveled to Canberra for the T20I series against Australia, with the team management prioritizing Iyer’s full recovery before any talk of a comeback.
