Should LIV star stars be admitted to the PGA Tour? Former Liv Pro weighs in

For 37-year-old Pro Hudson Swafford, leaving the PGA Tour to become a member of Liv Golf was not a decision he made lightly. The former Georgia Bulldog won three times on the PGA Tour between 2017 and 2022.

“It was definitely a difficult decision,” said Swafford in this week of Subpar. “I was intrigued by it.”

The allure of a shorter game schedule and team golf was attractive for Swafford, and he considered his options while taking free time before the birth of his second child during the winter and spring of 2022. At that time he also became more aware of persistent discomfort in his right hip. After wrestling with pain when he returned to the PGA Tour on the Byron Nelson 2022 and 2022 PGA Championship, Swafford said he started to think more seriously about Liv.

“They spent a lot of money, it was pretty tempting. I have never had anything guaranteed in my life,” Swafford told hosts Kolt Knost and Drew Stoltz. “The decision was not easy. I knew that I would take some heat for this. I didn’t know how much heat I would actually take. They were certainly some difficult times.”

Unfortunately for Swafford, his hip injury derailed his gaming career and missed the entire LIV golf season of 2023 after surgery. Last year, after he participated as Wildcard, Swafford was banned from Liv Golf. He is currently working in real estate while he is amid a PGA Tour suspension, which he says he will end in 2027.

With a PGA Tour/Liv -deal that was currently elusive, wanted to know and Knostz: how would Swafford LIV -stars such as Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka and Bryson treat Deschambeau if they wanted to return to the PGA Tour when their LIV contracts are?

“Man, I don’t know. That’s a good question,” said Swafford. “You have to look at it on this side: all these tour boys have equity in the Tour, right? So how would you not want Bryson and Brooks and the will of Dustin and Jon Rahm, Joaquin Niemann, all these good players to come back?

“That will increase your value, right?” He went on. “Like, your tour will get better with those who come back, but you really start to stitch on your nose and are you, we don’t need them because of a decision they have made? I don’t know.”
