So here’s my situation: Back in the day (~15 years ago) I built Drupal and WordPress templates in my spare time. My workflow involved designing layouts in InDesign/Photoshop and then coding everything from scratch in HTML/CSS. It was fun, but then life happened and I started working in marketing full time.
I want to create a one-page landing site for a music festival. Nothing complicated – just a responsive design, some sections and a contact form. Pretty standard stuff.
My dilemma: I heard that Figma is now the go-to tool for design. I still have my HTML and CSS knowledge from 15 years ago and I have recently started using Claude Code and assume it would be of great help to me in coding my layouts.
I wonder which option you would suggest:
Option 1: Learn Figma, design it, then code it from scratch (with AI help for the modern stuff I’m rusty at)
- Advantages: Unique, full control, maybe fun to get started with it again?
- Cons: The internet has changed SO much. Flex box? Rooster? Respond? Wind at your back? I’m actually starting all over again
Option 2: Just grab a nice WordPress festival theme and customize it
- Benefits: Fast, fewer headaches, gets the job done
- Disadvantages: Less unique, it feels like you are giving up the profession
Only option 3?
My question: Is it realistic for someone who has been out of the game for so long to return for a one-off project? Or am I nostalgic and should just WordPress it?
Has anyone been in a similar place? What would you do?
Thank you in advance!
