On Wednesday night, the Reds put in another terrible performance at Anfield, suffering a heavy defeat to Dutch club PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA Champions League. ..Continue reading
Goals from Ivan Perisic and Guus Til, along with a pair of goals from Couhaib Driouech, gave Peter Bosz’s men a memorable 4-1 victory. Dominik Szoboszlai scored Liverpool’s only goal.
This loss against PSV marked the third defeat in a row for Liverpool, after 3-0 defeats against Nottingham Forest and Manchester City.
Now that the team is twelfth in the Premier League and thirteenth in the Champions League group, the pressure on Slot is rapidly increasing.
While names such as Xabi Alonso, Andoni Iraola and Oliver Glasner have been frequently mentioned in connection with the Anfield job, a new and unexpected option has emerged.
TEAMtalk reports that former Tottenham Hotspur and Forest manager Ange Postecoglou could be considered by Liverpool should they choose to part ways with Slot.
According to the newspaper, Postecoglou, who was sacked by Forest earlier in the campaign, is “someone who the Liverpool board greatly admires and would be seen as someone who would suit the club”.
The article goes on to say that the Australian’s disastrous spell at the City Ground “has not dampened Liverpool’s admiration for him”.
When discussing Slot’s situation, a source told the publication: “[Is he in danger?] Yes and no – he is under pressure, but it is not as black and white as some say. We are going through a difficult time. Everyone knew that after Jurgen there would be a recession. We are entering a new cycle: new head coach, new staff, younger team profile. That was always part of the plan.
“Three or four more bad results and the conversation changes completely. But there is more room for maneuver than people on the outside think. At Liverpool we don’t fire managers so easily. The owners hate knee-jerk decisions and FSG still sees this as year zero of a multi-year project.”
After the defeat against PSV, Slot was asked whether he feared for his position.
He replied: “I feel safe, I am doing well, I have a lot of support from above.
“It would be nice to turn it around and get a win of course, but when you work as a coach and things don’t go well, it’s normal for questions to be asked. I’m okay with my position. It’s not the first time I’ve been in a difficult position, but it’s time we turn it around.”
Liverpool return to the Premier League this weekend and face West Ham United at the London Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
