Cameron Norrie of Great Britain claimed a first victory since the US Open in September and defeated the Frenchman Arthur Cazaux in a third set of Tie-Break to reach the third round of the Shanghai Masters.
The British number two was eliminated by Novak Djokovic in the third round at Flushing Meadows and has since tasted back-to-back defeats in Chengdu and Beijing.
But it turned out to be happy the third time in China for Norrie, because the five-time winner on the ATP tour achieved a roller coaster 6-3 0-6 7-6 (7-5) victory over world number 70.
Elsewhere the world number two Jannik Sinner started the defense of his title in Shanghai with a comfortable 6-3 6-3 victory over Daniel Altmaier in Germany.
Sinner, who won the China Open last week, broke early in both sets when he closed the third round in the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena.
The Italian will be confronted with Tallon Giekspoor in the Netherlands in the next round.
The German Alexander Zverev conquered a foot problem to secure his place in the third round with a 6-4 6-4 victory over Valentin Royer.
The Russian Daniil Medvedev came through his match with the Czech qualifying match Dalibor Svrcina, in which he played a 6-1 6-1 victory in 60 minutes.
Medvedev’s countryman Andrey Rublev was eliminated and fell on a surprise 2-6 6-1 6-4 defeat due to the Japanese qualification Yoshihito Nishioka.
Alex de Minauraur, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Lorenzo Musetti all came through their competitions to reach the last 32.
