Seth Jarvis’ OT Heroics lifts Hurricanes to 4-3 win over Kings – The Hockey Writers Carolina Hurricanes Latest News, Analysis & More

The Carolina Hurricanes entered their fifth game of the season trying to keep their winning streak alive. They wanted to avenge the 7-2 loss they suffered to the Los Angeles Kings last time out in Southern California. The Kings, who entered the game 1-3-1, tried to stop the bleeding of the current losing streak. Ultimately, the Hurricanes won in extra time 4-3remained undefeated.

Summary of the game

The Hurricanes got off to a fast start when Jordan Staal scored 12 seconds into the game to make it 2-0 just four minutes into the first period. According to Walt Ruffthe two goals Staal scored in the first 3:58 of the game are officially the fastest in team history by a single player since the move. Brandon Bussi was great early, making seven saves in the first period, most of them in the final two minutes of the opening frame, keeping the game at 2-0.

Unfortunately, Shayne Gostisbehere left during the first 20 minutes of the match and did not return due to a lower body injury. When Gostisbehere left the match, his four-game point streak came to an end. Despite the loss of “Ghost,” the Hurricanes had a great first period, taking a 2-0 lead and outscoring the Kings 13-7.

The Hurricanes scored again just under four minutes into the second period. After a huge save from Bussi at one end of the ice, K’Andre Miller got his first assist of the season when he jumped Jesperi Kotkaniemi on a breakaway. Kotkaniemi got the ball with a nifty play from Anton Forsberg, giving the Hurricanes a 3-0 lead. However, the Hurricanes would surrender two after Trevor Moore completed Bussi’s shutout when Warren Foegele screened him as the puck headed toward the net. Less than twelve minutes later, Andrei Kuzmenko made it a 3-2 game after scoring on the power play. Despite conceding two, the Hurricanes were still up 3-2 after the first 40 minutes and outscored the Kings 29-20 (15-12 shots to Carolina).

Only one goal was scored in the third period, and that goal came via Kevin Fiala and the Kings just over eleven minutes into the final regular frame. Despite starting the period with 1:26 of 5v3, the Hurricanes were unable to capitalize on the power play. They also defeated the Kings 11-8 during that period. Fiala’s goal forced extra time, with both teams securing at least a point.

In extra time it was the Hurricanes who secured the second point and the victory. Seth Jarvis scored his second overtime goal and fourth game winner of the season to put the Hurricanes up 5-0-0. According to Walt Ruff, Jarvis is the first player in NHL history to score four match-winning goals in the first five games of a season. It also gives him five consecutive games with a point, joining Sebastian Aho, who had the primary assist. The Hurricanes are now 3-0-0 on the road and have overrun California.

The Hurricanes continue their road trip as they visit the Vegas Golden Knights on Monday, October 20. The Puck Drop is scheduled for 10:00 PM Eastern. As for the Kings, their next game is scheduled for Tuesday, October 21, as they travel to St. Louis to take on the Blues. That game starts at 8:00 PM Eastern.
