Former Manchester United defender Sergio Reguilon is set to make a sensational return to football with a move to Inter Miami very close, according to a report.
Reguilon at United
Reguilon joined United in September 2023 on loan from Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
Erik ten Hag approved a move for the left back as an emergency signing following injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.
United agreed to cover Reguilon’s wages and viewed him as an ideal short-term option with strong attacking attributes from his time at Spurs, Sevilla and Real Madrid.
During his four-month spell at Old Trafford, Reguilon made 12 appearances for United. He started eight games and came off the bench four times. He registered no goals contribution for the club. His involvement waned as Shaw neared a return.
United eventually triggered a recall clause in the loan deal, returning Reguilon to Spurs after just 123 days.
Reguilon has been without a club since June. The Spaniard has not tasted a minute of senior football since May, when he was given a rare start for Spurs against Aston Villa.
Now a new report claims that Reguilon is on the verge of joining Lionel Messi at Inter Miami.
Reguilon would return
Marking [via The Mirror] reveal Reguilon to Inter Miami is “a done deal,” with an announcement expected soon.
The MLS club, owned by United legend David Beckham, Reguilon is the side’s ‘Plan A’ to replace Jordi Alba, who has retired from football along with teammate Sergio Busquets.
It’s clear that Reguilon has been training “extensively” himself and it looks like his hard work is finally paying off.
Meanwhile, United are back in action on Monday evening when they take on bottom-of-the-table Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molineux.
