Meet Kelsey Diclaudio, perhaps the best female athlete you’ve never heard of.
The resident of West-Pennsylvania is a competitor in Slee Hockey, a sport for para athletes with an ice rink and regulation goals, but instead of a single hockey stick to shoot the puck, the players use two cut sticks, every metal teeth to use them along the ice cream.
About the only difference between a sled hockey track and one for ice hockey is that the banking area has a sheet of plexiglas in front of the bank so that the players can follow the action and know when they have to start their next service. The input and exit to the ice is also the same as the inner feed of the bank area, which eliminates all steps of height difference.
Apart from these differences, the game the same players are trying to push the puck in a 4-bij-6-foot goal that is monitored by a goalkeeper. The rules online changes, glaze and offside are the same.
And so are Highlight-Reel-Thoneel pieces, such as those submitted by the American Downs’ team in the inaugural ladies Sleed Hockey World Championship in Slovakia. In the first period, Diclaudio roamed the net from behind the net, hit the puck from left to right under the sled and then lifted the puck with her right stick with an agile touch like a cook who turned a hamburger -patty, then with a flick of the wrist, kept it high over the Canadian goalkeeper in the top.
It was a play that is known as a ‘Michigan’, so named after Mike Legg, a university player who pulled a similar move in a game about 35 years ago.
But in Slee Hockey, the shot “Michigan” is almost unfair because keepers in the game are often of very short shape and the four feet of height cannot cover efficiently.
On the other hand, the Canada goalkeeper should not have felt bad; No one else in the tournament could also handle the American attack. The States won gold at the inaugural world championship, a competition that saw itself, Canada, Australia, Great -Britain, Norway and a rest of the world team.
Because there were only five full national teams at the tournament, the shortage of the number of teams that could demonstrate the viability for admission to the Paralympic program. But given the number of countries with men’s hockey for men, it is just a matter of time.
