Manchester United picked up their third clean sheet of the Michael Carrick era on Monday as they beat Everton 1-0 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
It was hardly a vintage display, but Matheus Cunha’s stunning long ball, combined with Benjamin Sesko’s ice-cold finish, put the Red Devils on course for a famous away win.
However, the Toffees came down hard on the visitors as they searched for an equalizer, throwing the kitchen sink at them in the final moments of the match.
The United box was bombarded with crosses and set-piece deliveries, with Everton players surrounding the keeper. The box sometimes resembled a wrestling arena.
Senne Lammens was imperious against Everton
Senne Lammens must have been under pressure, but he looked like the coolest man on Merseyside on Monday night. With attack after attack being withdrawn, what impressed the fans most was the way the Belgian handled the situation.
He caught most crosses and shots rather than deflecting them, only hitting away when there was no other option. The summer signing was rightly awarded the Man of the Match award.
United’s backline has looked transformed since the former Royal Antwerp ace started in goal, and his form has impressed United’s goalkeepers.
According to The sunTom Heaton has been a huge help to the Belgium international, and both the Englishman and reserve keeper Altay Bayindir believe the 23-year-old can be United’s No.1 for years to come.
What United’s other goalkeepers think about Senne Lammens
However, the duo have identified one area that Senne Lammens needs to work more on: his shot-stopping when it comes to incredible long-range strikes.
“Lammens said how much Tom Heaton helped him and United sources said the two goalkeepers ‘did a good job’.
“The club’s goalkeepers believe that Lammens can be a top goalkeeper for a long time to come.
“They are particularly impressed with his ball handling and believe the next area in which he can improve is making ‘irrecoverable’ stops.”
Next area for improvement identified
Goals from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Morgan Rogers earlier this season are perfect examples of shots the current No. 1 needs to do better on.
It is not a criticism, but a fair perspective, which, if Lammens improves, will help both him and Manchester United in the long term.
