Senne Lammens Schmeichel comparisons and ‘Honour’ for Goalkeeper

Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens has spoken of the “honor” of being compared to club legend Peter Schmeichel by supporters.

One of the biggest success stories of Man United’s summer window was the deadline day signing of Senne Lammens from Belgian side Royal Antwerp.

The 23-year-old was excellent between the sticks for Ruben Amorim’s side.

And his performances have not gone unnoticed by the supporters.

United fans have taken to serenading Lammens in recent weeks, with a humorous nod to one of their former heroes.

“Are you Schmeichel in disguise?” has been heard at Old Trafford, with fans raving about their new goalkeeper

And while Lammens himself admits that such comparisons are premature, he is delighted with the support fans have given him.

Manchester United’s transfer ambitions were dealt a blow this week when main goalkeeper Ayyoub Bouaddi signed a new contract with Lille.

But with Lammens they seem to have found a long-term answer to their goalkeeping problems.

Senne Lammens “honored” by Schmeichel chants

Lammens said via the Manchester United website: “It was very nice to hear it in the first game [against Sunderland].

“I think it’s a sign that the fans are happy with me.

“It feels very good that I can give them that confidence.”

Lammens spoke to legendary Danish goalkeeper Schmeichel ahead of United’s 2-1 win over Liverpool in October.

“He just wished me luck and told me to be myself,” Senne revealed.

“He gave me good energy for the Liverpool game and obviously we won that, so I think that was really nice.”

The Belgian also discussed how he uses journaling to keep himself calm, adding that writing in his notebook helps him cope with the intense pressure of top-flight football.

“It started when I started playing for Antwerp,” he says.

“I like to write things down before and after the game, just to get my head in the right mindset, and then get things off your chest after the game.

“I write down things about how the opponent is playing and how they are pressuring me, and also individual things I need to know during the match, nothing special – just something to get my head in the right mindset.”

How good was Peter Schmeichel for Manchester United

Although intended ironically, comparisons to Peter Schmeichel are a huge compliment for any Man United goalkeeper.

The Danish icon redefined what it meant to be an elite shot-stopper in the 1990s.

His athleticism, reflexes and towering presence were synonymous with the early Sir Alex Ferguson years at Old Trafford.

Schmeichel played 398 games for United between 1991 and 1999.

He helped the club win five Premier League titles, three FA Cups, the League Cup and the famous treble of Champions League in 1999 in his last game for the club.

Considered one of the best goalkeepers of all time, he kept 180 clean sheets for United.

In addition to his incredible shot stopping, Schmeichel was ahead of his time in terms of ballplay.

His long, flat throws were used to devastating effect to deliver counterattacks with deadly precision.

And his general charisma caused countless attackers to crumble when they played him one-on-one.

It will take a long time before the Zenne Lammens comes close to the heights of Peter Schmeichel.

But the young Belgian has made an ideal start at Old Trafford, and the fans have welcomed him well.

Only time will tell if he can build on that and continue the fantastic beginnings at the club.
