Summary of the game
The first period passed without a goal. The Senators had two power play chances and the Jets had one, but both clubs’ penalty kills were strong.
The Senators broke the ice midway through the second when Cousins, wide open, fired a wrist shot that snuck through the blocker’s sidearm of Connor Hellebuyck.
The Jets then struck for two goals late in the frame and took a 2-1 lead in the third. First, with just over four minutes left, Pionk hit a one-timer from the point past Linus Ullmark. The puck seemed to change direction on its way to the net.
Then, with 1:25 to go, Stanley continued his streak by scoring his sixth of the season – snapping a puck short side at Ullmark — to surpass his production from his first five seasons combined.
The score remained 2-1 until 1:54 remained in regulation, when Sanderson, with an empty net, tied the game. on a point shot which deflected off Mark Scheifele’s stick.
The game went to overtime and after an excellent stop by Ullmark on Kyle Connor, Tkachuk put a stop to proceedings with his second of the season.
Comments and observations
Hellebuyck made 28 saves on 31 shots in his second game back after arthroscopic knee surgery. Ullmark stopped 23 of 25.
The Jets’ power play went zero for two, while the Senators were zero for three.
The Jets return to action on Wednesday in St. Louis, taking on the Blues in the first game of a three-game road trip to conclude the pre-Christmas portion of their schedule. The Senators return home Thursday to host the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first game of a two-game homestand.
