Selecting the correct target to hit the fairway

The topic of selecting the right target for your golf swing is a challenging one. For years, a friend has stood behind me as I hit a tee shot and let me know whether (after I told him) I hit my target or not. We are not focused on the result of the shot, but on whether I actually hit what I aimed for. If I hit my target (which is usually the case), then my ball is in play on the fairway. Occasionally I’ll miss, but not enough to be out of the game. It’s not that I always make a great swing, but after years of practice I’m confident that I’ll hit my target off the tee. I bet you’re wondering what my secret is to this challenging feat and I’m here to tell you in the hopes that it lowers your golf scores.

The process for my target group selection is twofold. It’s mental and physical. Of the two, my mental selection is the more important. By selecting a target far down the fairway, I tell my brain that I want to aim for a small target and focus on what I need to do physically to make that happen. I realize it seems like a different approach, but I have found that my body will adapt to trying to achieve what my brain has in mind.

Therefore, when I choose my target, I think I can always shoot. It’s my sole focus when preparing for my shot and like I said, my body just falls in line. Everything is right to get the shot I want to achieve. Where I’m trying to draw, fade or hit straight, my mind is focused on my goal. I’m not sure I’m fully explaining this, but my mental process is much more important than my physical one.

My physical process always starts with my pre-recording warm-up. Standing behind the ball and focusing on my goal is the first step. The next steps happen automatically from the moment I start walking towards the ball. While I stay focused on my goal, I approach the ball and hit away. This process usually works extremely well as I play from the tee 90% of the time.

I assume you have come to the conclusion that it is important to have a mental process to achieve your goal in golf. Staying focused on your small aim point is the key to hitting the ball off the tee box during the game. Achieving my goal is always my focus. If you make it yours, I think good things will happen to your golf game.

I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
