The ATP Tour heads to Montpellier this week for indoor ATP 250 action at the Occitanie Open, where Top 10 star and defending champion Felix Auger-Aliassime tops the field.

The draw in the south of France also includes Stan Wawrinka, who is competing in the final year of his career, and Top 30 stars Flavio Cobolli, Tallon Greekpoor and Tomas Machac. Meanwhile, home favorite Arthur Fils makes his return to the competition for the first time since July last year.

ATPtour.com looks at five things to watch this week.

“ATP

1) Felix strives for a quick response: Auger-Aliassime, ranked No. 8 in the PIF ATP Rankings, will look to make a quick comeback after being forced to withdraw from his first-round match at the Australian Open due to cramps. The 25-year-old has plenty to be confident about in Montpellier: he is the defending champion there and has won seven of his eight ATP Tour crowns indoors. Auger-Aliassime’s opening opponent in France will be Wawrinka or Hamad Medjedovic.

2) Fils returns after six months of absence: Home fans will welcome one of France’s top stars back to Montpellier as Arthur Fils will make his return to ATP Tour action after a six-month absence due to a back injury. He will face compatriot Valentin Royer in the first round. The 21-year-old Fils reached the semi-finals in his only previous appearance in Montpellier in 2023 before falling to eventual champion Jannik Sinner.

3) Wildcard Wawrinka: The Swiss started his final year on the ATP Tour with a string of fighting performances at the United Cup and the Australian Open, where he reached the third round. Former world number 3 Wawrinka will now head to Montpellier, where he will compete as a wildcard and face Serbian Medjedovic first. Hubert Hurkacz, another former Top 10 star who won 4-1 in singles to help Poland win the United Cup, will start in a qualifying match.

4) Top 30 stars in action: Like Auger-Aliassime, Cobolli hopes to quickly put a first-round exit in Australia behind him in Montpellier. The Italian is the second seed in France, while Tallon Greekpoor is seeded third. Fourth seed Tomas Machac is chasing his second ATP 250 crown of the season after triumphing in Adelaide in mid-January.

5) At home, Doumbia/Reboul hopes to take the lead in doubles: Sadio Doumbia and Fabien Reboul lifted the Montpellier trophy together in 2024, with the French duo returning as the top seeds this year. Their doubles rivals include second seeds Jakob Schnaitter and Mark Wallner, while Wawrinka teams up with home favorite Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
