Just mention the Scotty Cameron Tour prototypes and you’ll have the attention of hordes of golf equipment nerds everywhere.
So Titleist is giving gear nerds what they want with the release of Scotty Cameron’s new Studio Xperimental Limited putters.
The Studio
“Studio “With the line’s multi-material design, face milling of chain links, unique alignment features and custom grip and axle, every element of Studio Xperimental is designed to inspire confidence – from setup to strike.”
Keep reading below to learn more about the Studio Xperimental Limited putter line and my thoughts on the new release.
What is Studio Xperimental Limited?
The name Xperimental is nothing new for fans of Scotty Cameron. The name is often applied to Tour-only prototype designs for the world’s best players, but some of those putters are making their way to retail, either in limited editions or as a one-off creation at the Scotty Cameron Gallery.

With the new Studio
Both putters feature I-beam plumber necks, a tour-preferred Steel Gray PVD finish, a custom black graphite shaft and parallel topline sightlines. For the Fastback, which is being called the Fastback 2 to reflect the neck style, this is the first time the putter has been available to the public with a plumber’s neck. The current Studio Style line only includes the Fastback (single-bend) and Fastback 1.5 (I-beam jetneck).
The graphite shaft is also a rarity for a Scotty Cameron retail release, even a limited version. In fact, it is the first time since the Masters Choice Classic 1 Limited Run of 1993-94 that a Cameron release has featured a graphite shaft.

The limited edition putters also feature the same Studio Carbon Steel face insert with chain-link face milling as the Studio Style versions, but it is black nickel plated to match the Steel Gray PVD finish.
Who are the Studio Xperimental putters intended for?
Scotty Cameron fans and gear nerds of all kinds will be clamoring for this release. However, the new Studio Xperimental putters will suit some specific golfers.
Players who prefer darker finished putters, such as the recently released Phantom black putters or the 2012-2013 Select line, will appreciate the muted and less reflective tones of the Steel Gray PVD. The darker finish is a common request on Tour.

But perhaps the most sought after is the Fastback 2, because the Fastback shape is not yet available with a plumber’s neck. The Fastback is a more rounded head and suits the eyes of players who like softer lines, while the Squareback – as the name suggests – is more angular.
My thoughts
The new Fastback and Squareback designs have proven very popular in both the Tour and retail markets, so it’s no surprise that Cameron threw a few new options at consumers in the form of a limited release.

Personally, I’ve always been drawn to darker finished putters, and don’t need the horizontal two-tone alignment tools of the standard Studio Style versions, so it’s nice to see a mostly monochrome version of these new shapes. What’s interesting is that on Tour, Cameron is offering a flipped version of the retail putter – a black putter with silver alignment aids. So it’s remarkable that they chose the monochrome version.

Scotty Cameron Phantom Black Putters | 3 things you need to know about the new line
By means of:
Jack Hirsch
Scotty Cameron will typically reveal next year’s product features in their end-of-season releases – as they presumably did with the Phantom Black – and the Studio Style line will likely get some extension. Will that include the Fastback 2? We won’t know for a while, it seems.
It also seems clear that Cameron is going all-in with the SCS insert and chain milling pattern. Milling the chain links was a part of every Scotty Cameron release this year.
