World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler brought the early week to NAPA, California, on the ProCore Championship that so many Ryder Cup -PREP received – both on and in addition to the course – before the confrontation with Team Europe in Bethpage Black in two weeks.
Then came the tournament, the first of the FedEx Cup -Leistenen of the PGA Tour, and Scheffler did what he did all year round, whether it is on the CJ Cup Byron Nelson or the Open Championship: he was slowly stood on the leadboard and finally ended up as the last man who stood with a trophy in the hand.
Scheffler’s time in Silverado Resort started Rocky when he worked to get the speed of the greens down. But a Saturday 64 vaulted him within two shots of Ben Griffin. On Sunday, Scheffler made six birdies during a final round 67 to finish in 19 under Par and Top Griffin by one after his Ryder Cup teammate missed a five-foot Birdie Putt to bind to the last hole.
The victory was Scheffler’s sixth of the season, which according to Justin Ray has made him the fourth player since 1960 to win six or more times in successive seasons on the PGA Tour. The other three? Tiger Woods (three times), Jack Nicklaus (1972-73) and Arnold Palmer (three times).
Scheffler’s victory in Wine Country was a cherry on top of a week that was completely over the event that looms up on the horizon. After Team USA suffered from competitive rust (among other things) in the loss of 2023 in Rome, Scheffler thinks the Ryder Cup training camp in Napa’s work.
“I always concentrate as much as I can in my preparation in tournaments, that is what gives me confidence, and I feel that I am prepared as possible for the Ryder Cup,” Scheffler said after his victory on Sunday. “I think we are all enthusiastic about the tournament to start with. We have three days in New York to compete and have fun. We are all looking forward to it.”

The Ryder Cup training camp from Team USA seemed to be a success. Scheffler and Griffin worked it out on Sunday, with JJ Spaun and Cameron Young every card of the top 10 finishes. Russell Henley started strong but slid during the weekend, while Justin Thomas, Harris English and Collin Morikawa were not competitive in Napa.
While Scheffler’s victory gets the headlines from the Ryder Cup Prep Week of Team USA, two of his teammates were the radiant stars for his weekend drink.
The first was Griffin. A Ryder Cup-Rookie who won the Charles Schwab Challenge and Team Event Zurich Classic this season, continued Griffin his sizzling Hot Play in Napa and showed no rust of a few weeks off after the Fedex Cup Play-Offs. None of this surprises Scheffler, who has known Griffin since their days as junior golfers.
“When you talk to Ben, he is a man who has a lot of confidence, he has a lot of confidence,” said Scheffler. “That is what we like about the fact that he is part of our Ryder Cup team.
“Ben is a man who has always done a lot of work and he is always looking for improvement. He never lacked trust, and this year he will be a large part of our Ryder Cup team, and I am sure he is part of many teams that will also be in the future.”
As Griffin and Scheffler showed that they were ready on the track, a member of Team USA remained, who was not allowed to show it in Silverado Resort why he could become the biggest weapon of Bradley.
Bryson Deschambeau was present for all team construction activities of Team USA in NAPA. Although he could not play, because he is not a member of the PGA Tour, Decchambeau continues to impress his teammates with his buy-in and team-first attitude.
“Not only this week did he make efforts to also come to other meetings and other dinners,” Collin Morikawa said about Deschambeau on Wednesday. “It shows that he just cares about it. I think this whole individual aspect, we have thrown it all out of the window and we will all do what is needed to be with the team.”
Bradley has been exuberant in his praise from Dephambeau in recent months and remained the Liv Golf star Putten because he had everything about winning the Ryder Cup back in Bethpage Black, regardless of his place in the constant bourgeois conflict of Pro Golf.
“At the moment we are in the golf world in an uncomfortable place where we are in the golf world,” said Bradley Wednesday. “Much of that responsibility has fallen on Bryson. He has to make a much greater effort than many of the boys. Bryson was there last night. He has been incredible. He has been more than willing to go beyond and outside for this team. I think it is a will to come to come. The plane, he must come to these brays for the team.
“Of course, from the point of view of how good a player he is, but he is also nice to be around, he is great for the younger guys. It’s nice for us to see Bryson in an atmosphere outside the golf course.”
Bradley did not get stuck to see the Sunday final. He didn’t have to. Like everyone else, he has seen Scheffer choke golf tournaments in recent years.
He only hopes that World No. 1 can do it again in two weeks at Bethpage Black.
