The women’s Scottish Cup matches produced results that were somewhat at odds with the current trend in the competition.
Holders Edinburgh University were somehow dumped out of the competition by Grange with an emphatic 5-1 scoreline. And Edinburgh students sit at the top of the Premier League. Heather Croll was top with a double and Grange’s other hits came from Rachel Shiel, Izzy Alexander and Eve Downie. Cat Nelli received comfort from the students.
And if that wasn’t enough, Watsonians were dumped out of the competition by a revived GHK side in a penalty shoot-out. In normal time, Fiona Burnet put the Edinburgh side a goal ahead in the second quarter and the feeling was that a regular win for Watsonians would follow given their dominance. But that was not the case, with seven minutes to go Jo Boyle scored the equalizer and the match ended 1-1 in regular time.
The penalty shoot-out continued unabated until 5-5, but then Lucy Williamson scored to give GHK a ticket to the next round. An attention grabber perhaps, but it’s just another chapter in GHK’s recovery after a slow start to the league season.
However, special mention must be made of GHK keeper Ali Westwood, who made a series of crucial saves to frustrate Watsonians and the praise from her colleagues was “she was fantastic.”
But that’s what the Scottish Cup is all about.
Orkney Ladies came to Inverness at half-time and were rewarded with a 2-0 win over ESM.
In perhaps the top match of the men’s Scottish Cup, Edinburgh University traveled to Auchenhowie to take on Western Wildcats and came away with a 3-2 win and a place in the next round. And what was the catalyst – surprise, surprise, a Jamie Golden hat-trick. Wildcats answers came from Iain McFadden and Fraser Moran, but not enough to save the draw, and it is Edinburgh who progress to the next round.
In Edinburgh, Grange took revenge for yesterday’s league defeat to ESM Lion by scoring a single win over the same side in today’s cup. The only goal of the match came after seven minutes with a good run and cross from David Nairn, which was hit into the net by Jacob Tweedie. Both teams had chances, but no further goals were scored. The Lions applied a lot of pressure in the final quarter, but Grange held on to progress to the quarter-finals.
Hillhead traveled to Tayside on cup business and came away with a tough 3-2 win and passage to the next round. The visitors looked to be in control of the tie with a 3-1 lead, the goals coming from Euan Menzies with a back-footed shot, Matt Carder with an overhead kick and finally Fraser Ward from the spot. Wanderers then reduced the score to 3-2 with four minutes to go, but the Glasgow team held on. Wanderers’ goals came from Oscar Brown and Sean Dowie.
It was a good weekend for Clydesdale, yesterday they picked up their first Premiership points, and today they avoided a slip in a banana peel cup match against second-tier leaders Dunfermline Carnegie in Fife with a 5-2 win. There were individual scorers in Joel Reid, Andy McAllan, Euan Lindsay, Euan Anderson and Kyle Bannerman.
Watsonians avoided any hangover from Saturday’s defeat to Uddingston with a 14-goal win over Stirling Wanderers, Tommy Orr scoring a hat-trick and there were two goals each for Ollu Magowan and Gabe Tenner, the rest being individual strikes.
In another draw, Glasgow University won 7-3 against Granite City Wanderers.
