Scotland: Scotland -women draw with Spain at euros in Monchengladbach

A Heather McEwan equalizer gave Scotland Women a 1-1 draw against higher-ranked Spain at the Eurohockey championship in Monchengladbach, Germany.

Scotland had a great opening quarter in terms of opportunities and possession, and showed great calmness against the highly appreciated Spaniards.

Jenny Eadie came close to opening the score with a direct point and shot, which was well stored. Then Ruth Blaikie slid a sublime pass in the Spanish circle for Fiona Burnet to dive, but she could not get a touch on the ball and this ran wide.

Then Spain scored against the game. A bend and shot by Lucia Jimenez found a road past Jess Buchanan for 1-0.

The game waved from next to each other with the teams that looked evenly together. Ellie Mackenzie was influential and Costello was solid as the defensive pivot.

Buchanan made a number of excellent saves to keep Scotland within Spain’s reach.

The Scotland’s press was exceptional during the game and they broke in the last quarter to try to find an equalizer.

With four minutes to play Scotland right. Mackenzie went on a sizzling run in the circle and chose Heather McEwan to touch it for 1-1.

Spain stacked on the pressure in the final phase, but the Scots held up and took their first point of the tournament.
