You can see the ready-made concrete trucks that are through the city, large drums that constantly chore, on their way to construction sites in most major cities in the country. You can’t really call them under the radar, because they are large, bustling and noisy trucks, but the brand name on the mixers may not be clear to many. It is inevitable that the Schwing Stetter mixers will be a key role in the construction tree in the cities and cities of the country.
While a solid production company for concrete equipment such as Schwing Stetter, a subsidiary of a German company (and now Chinese ownership of the Major XCMG of the construction), perhaps not top of mind for the lay public, the company plays a key role behind the scenes. For Sakthi Kumar it has been a trip, starting in a small office with two rooms in 1998, so that Schwing equipment is imported for use in the country. From the first factory started in 2001 in Sriperumbudur on the outskirts of Chennai, Schwing Stetter was extended today to five factories, with a global production hub in Cheyyar in TN, about 100 km from Chennai City. Over five factories, Schwing makes a series of concrete batch plants, mixers, pumps, truck -mounted batch pumps, short concrete pumps (where material is sprayed at high speed on a surface, useful in tunnel construction or slopes). “What started as just an outpost for the group has now become our largest business center in the world – in capacity, manpower, turnover and profit margin. We are number one worldwide,” says Sakthi Kumar.
Flowering export
In the recent past it has exported around 1600 units to the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam, usually mixers, pumps and batch plants. More recently, in South Africa, after trying of European, Japanese, Korean and Chinese sources, customers have settled there last year with Schwing Stetter. The company has been exported to around 60 countries. “Last year our export was around £ 140 crore, of the total things of £ 2,400 crore, that is around 5 percent. But this year we already crossed that in six months. So we could end the year with around £ 300 crore in export, more than double the previous year. Doubling,” he explains.
In the factory of the company in Cheyyar there is a group of about 20 girls for a theory class about welding equipment. The approval of Ready-Mix Concrete (RMC) in India is increasing, especially in urban areas, but it still forms a relatively small part of the total concrete consumption of the country. “Although the use of RMC has grown, estimates suggest that it is still only about 20 percent of the total concrete use at national level good. Sakthi Kumar says that there are still technologies that are absent in construction equipment that comes in SS. “Although we have found a solution for concrete, the plaster is still being done manually. So, recently, we have introduced a plaster pump. Our batching factory for concrete for concrete.
SS has also entered brick plants and concrete blocks. Making concrete blocks is LowTech, but making the machines to produce those blocks is a high technology. “That’s what we want to go into,” he adds. The other large trend he points to is making prefabricated floors to walls. Many construction companies look at prefabricated components to quickly complete a building. “Normally, if you pour concrete floor for floor, you have to wait 28 days for curing before adding the next floor. But here prefabricated floors are made elsewhere, brought to the site and then lifted by a tap and placed in position,” explains Kumar.
Icing
Prefab also requires temperature control, so SS also makes ice plants to cool the concrete. Ice for concrete, people asks incredible. The investment so far in the new initiatives is around £ 350 crore and another £ 125 crore will be the tab for extensions. Once ready, SS plants an extra £ 300 crore on further initiatives.
Schwing Stetter, IIT Madras and Chennai Metro worked together during the first phase of the metro construction. When a metro volume is built, the upper meter is broken down and thrown away so that the reinforcement bars can be exposed. That waste concrete, which lasts 600 years to break down, ended up in Dumping. The three entities worked together to see how that waste could recycle in fresh concrete. Their research proved that 25 percent of the recycled aggregate could be used safely.
This was accepted by the government that had released an order that every city with a million population should have a construction and demolition waste yard for recycling and to make it commercially available. “Chennai has a garden and C&D waste recycling and this recycled concrete is commercially available, but to be put on the market powerfully. We recommend that the tenders must have a clause to use this C&D waste that is being investigated,” says Kumar.
The goal of Schwing Stetter, says Sakthi Kumar, is to deliver world class technology at lower costs than global players. “That is why our export is growing. Our experience in India has enabled us to be price -competitive, even against Chinese products. This advantage will only rise because the costs in China are likely to rise faster than in India.” It is clear that he has concrete plans for the future.
