State Bank of India (SBI) is stepping up efforts to increase gender diversity and aims to achieve 30% women representation in its workforce within the next five years.“When we talk about frontline staff, women make up almost 33%, but in total they represent 27% of the total workforce. So, we will work towards improving this percentage so that diversity is further improved,” SBI deputy director (HR) and chief development officer (CDO) Kishore Kumar Poludasu told PTI.The bank is working towards achieving its medium-term target of having 30% women in its workforce, he added. With over 2.4 million employees, SBI has one of the largest workforces in the Indian banking sector. The bank implements targeted measures to bridge the gender gap and create a workplace where women can thrive at all levels.Key initiatives include childcare benefits for working mothers, family contact programs and training for women returning from maternity leave, sabbaticals or long-term sick leave. The programs of the nation’s largest lenders aim to identify, mentor and train women for leadership roles through structured labs and coaching, preparing them to be future top executives.Recognizing the unique health needs of women, SBI has introduced targeted programs such as breast and cervical cancer screenings, nutritional benefits for pregnant staff and cervical cancer vaccination campaigns.SBI has also expanded its all-female branches, with over 340 branches currently run exclusively by female staff, a number that will grow in the coming years.
