Bharat Aluminum Company (BALCO), part of Vedanta Aluminum, has joined a number of global manufacturers with million tonne capacity after commissioning a new 0.5 million tonne capacity.

The company has commissioned the country’s largest 525 kilo Ampere (kA) smelter under its ongoing 1 MTPA expansion project.

With the commissioning of the new 0.435 MTPA potting line, BALCO’s total aluminum production capacity will reach 1 MTPA.

The expansion will increase the availability of high-quality, domestically produced aluminum for critical sectors such as defense, aerospace, automotive, construction and energy transmission.

With the ramp-up, BALCO will account for more than 20 percent of the total aluminum production in India.

The company has collaborated with leading global and domestic partners, including Larsen & Toubro, Asea Brown Boveri, Siemens and Guiyang Aluminum Magnesium Design & Research Institute Co, for advanced engineering, automation and efficiency-driven systems.

Rajesh Kumar, CEO and Managing Director of BALCO, said the company will write a new chapter in India’s journey towards self-reliance by joining the multi-million dollar club.

Through this expansion, the company will generate new employment opportunities, stimulate investments in allied industries and boost economic growth in Chhattisgarh, he added.

BALCO will also expand its downstream capabilities to meet India’s rising demand for advanced aluminum applications.

The company has modernized and expanded its rolled products manufacturing facility to 1.8 lakh tonnes per annum to meet the specialized requirements in key sectors. In addition, a new 50 kTPA wire rod line has been commissioned, increasing BALCO’s total wire rod capacity to 2.3 LTPA. These investments will broaden the company’s value-added product portfolio and improve the competitiveness of the Indian industry.

With BALCO’s capacity expansion to 1 MTPA, Vedanta Aluminum will scale up to 2.8 MTPA, positioning the company as the world’s largest aluminum producer and a key enabler in India’s industrial self-reliance.
