Josh Sargent started the EFL season of 2025-26 with a strong note.
Sargent scored his second goal in as many starts as Norwich City Watford beat 2-1 in League Cup Play Tuesday. The American striker helped the Canary state to go to the second round with a road victory at Vicarage Road.
Sargent only needed 10 minutes to break the impasse, causing the Pape Diallo’s pass from Home Pape in the top left corner. It marked his 50th goal for the club in all matches, making him the sixth player in the history of Norwich City to reach that brand.
Marcelino Nunez doubled the canaries that were ahead in the first half, giving them a 2-0 lead during the break.
Kwadwo Baah withdrew a goal for Watford after the hour, but it was closest to the hosts at a comeback.
Norwich City would continue to continue in the competition and also earn the first victory of the new season.
The next for Sargent and his teammates from Norwich City are a trip to Portsmouth on August 16.
Haji Wright played a key role in the EFL Cup extend of Coventry City.
Wright assisted with the winner of Ellis Simms and helped the Sky Blues Luton Town to beat 1-0 on a home floor. It marked Wright’s first target contribution of the new campaign.
The decisive moment came in the 58th minute when Wright made contact with Simms for the Go-Ahead goal. It marked Wright’s first target contribution at club level since 21 April.
The men of Frank Lampard would persist for the home win and they would go to the second round.
