On Tuesday, the WTA 250 Sāo Paulo opened the greatest Brazilian tennis player of all time, Maria Esther Bueno, who died in 2018 at the age of 78, as well as the players of the country who reached the Top 100 in the WTA rangers.

Opening game on the Main Show Court, the top-ranking Beatriz Haddad Maia started her campaign in impressive style and beat Miriana Tona van Italy, 6-1 6-1, to continue to the 2nd round where she will meet her colleague Brazilian, Laura Pigossi.

Haddad Maia dominated the match against Tona and only needed 76 minutes on the field to close the match before she honored a signature on the camera and become emotional when they talk about them on the field.

British no. 4 Fran Jones, the 6th seed, needed 2 hours and 17 minutes to think of her way along Lina Glushko from Israel and had to come from a set to win, 4-6 6-2 6-3.

Jones will meet Whitney Osuigwe from the US on Wednesday for a place in the quarterfinals.

In the meantime, Alexandra Eala won her debut match at the SP and is enchanted with the Brazilian audience.

The Filipino had an easy 6-0 6-2 victory against the Yasmine Mansouri of France in the opening match of the night session and only needs 70 minutes to continue.

“I really enjoyed playing here tonight,” said Eala. “Playing Night Games is something that does not happen often for me, so I enjoyed it a lot, especially with the friendly audience.

“I was happy that many people came to look at me. The atmosphere adds a lot when many people cheer and, I think I was lucky that I was played between Laura and Bia. I am very grateful for the audience that came to visit me and encourage me.”

Eala, the no. 3 Seed, then takes on the Argentinian Julia Riera for a place in the last 8.

Ana Candiotto, from São Paulo, made her successful debut in her first WTA 250 match of her career against the Ukrainian Valeriya Strakhova, the 21-year-old Wildcard Die Valeriya Trakhova, 6-3 5-7 6-0, in 2 hours and 1 minutes.

The 21-year-old Candiotto suffered a break in the 3rd game of the first set, but recovered to win 5 games in a row to take the opener, and then built a 4-1 lead in the second, but she could not close the game, because the 30-year-old Poorhovah brought the duel and the match with a love game in a set.
