Sanmina expands medical facility in Cork, creating 150 jobs

The company designs and produces products for various sectors, including medicine, defense, communications and the cloud.

US manufacturing company Sanmina is expanding its medical facility in Fermoy, north Cork. The expansion is expected to create up to 150 skilled jobs in engineering, quality, manufacturing and operations, with recruitment already underway.

Sanmina designs, manufactures and repairs electronic and mechanical products and serves a variety of industries including medical, defense, aerospace, automotive, communications networks and cloud infrastructure. The company’s global operations span 21 countries and employ approximately 35,000 people.

Fermoy’s medical facility opened in 1989 – nine years after the company was founded, and has since grown into the company’s largest medical facility in Europe. The latest expansion project strengthens Ireland’s role as a medical manufacturing hub, the company said.

The site has advanced manufacturing capabilities and features the company’s first new automation line, which has already been installed and commissioned. The expansion also includes a new ISO8 cleanroom and several large-scale automation lines for the production of wearable medical devices.

The completed facility will be opened today (November 3) by Prime Minister Michel Martin. “I am delighted to visit Sanmina today as they officially open this expanded facility and create up to 150 new jobs in Fermoy,” the Taoiseach said.

“Sanmina has been part of the community in Fermoy, home to the largest medical facility in Europe, since 1989. This expansion is a strong vote of confidence in the skills, talent and capability of the workforce in Cork and beyond, and of Ireland’s continued attractiveness as a destination for international investment and as a world leader in medical technology innovation.”

Sean Moran, SVP of IMS Europe at Sanmina, said: “This expansion underlines Sanmina’s long-term commitment to Fermoy and Ireland as a center of excellence for medical technology manufacturing.

“For more than 36 years, our Fermoy facility has been driven by exceptional talent and a strong culture of innovation and quality. That combination has been critical to our success and in supporting our customers’ growth in the global medical device market, while creating high-quality employment and opportunities in the region.”

Sanmina recently purchased ZT Systems’ data center infrastructure manufacturing business from AMD for $3 billion.

“Sanmina has been providing significant employment in Fermoy for decades. This expansion future-proofs the site and demonstrates the company’s continued commitment to the south-west region,” said Mary Buckley, Executive Director of IDA Ireland.
