Host: “Let’s move west quickly. There’s a lot of talk about how these Sharks want to add at the trade deadline for such a young team. Is this something you can see happening?”
Jim Biringer: “Yes, absolutely. I could definitely see them doing it, and I think they’re taking that next step. And it helps when you get Macklin Celebrini on pace to do what he does, like 130 points, and they’ve accelerated the rebuild.”
NHL Rumors: Montreal Canadiens and Young Trade Asset Tiers
But they had some lean years there in San Jose. They were the doormat for a while. And you get those top prospects, and Will Smith and Macklin Celebrini play really well. And now they’re getting goaltending, and they’ve added to that along the way.
Defensively, they haven’t really signed anyone in the next few years, so that’s probably an area they’ll look to add. I know they were connected to Dougie Hamilton. Dougie Hamilton said: No. He didn’t want to go to San Jose. Is that something he’s thinking about again? But at this point, New Jersey with the Luke Hughes injury might not move him anymore unless they really stop and just say, ‘Okay, we’re going to get into the season and they’re going to sell some more assets.’
Because obviously Ondrej Palat was moved to the New York Islanders, but San Jose is taking the next step to, ‘Okay, we didn’t think there would be a playoff team. We knew it would be better, but I don’t think anyone expected this.” Now they can still miss, but I think it shows that Mike Grier added Kiefer Sherwood.
If he adds Artemi Panarin or another impact type player, he’s telling the room, ‘Hey, I believe in you. I believe in this group that we’ve put together, and we’re going to give you a chance to make the playoffs because that’s what it’s all about.”
And everyone says: rebuild and re-equip and all that. But sometimes these general managers say, “Hey, you know what? It’s from year to year; Now if we have a chance to win it, we’re going to do it.’ And I really believe Mike Grier will be aggressive enough to do that and reward this group.”
NHL Rumors: How big would the San Jose Sharks be willing to add to their blueline?
NHL Rumors.com Note: The San Jose Sharks have been working their way through the draft, but Grier has added players like Yaroslav Askarov, Tyler Toffoli, Alexander Wennberg, Barclay Goodrow, Dmitry Orlov and others along the way to help this young Sharks group perform this season. It’s been a few years of sadness for this group, but Ryan Warsofsky got this group playing the right way. Let’s see what happens at the trade deadline, but the expectation is that the Sharks will add.
