TL; DR

  • A Samsung executive has confirmed that the S Pen will continue to be available on future devices.
  • Won-Joon Choi, COO of Samsung’s MX division, said the S Pen will remain a “core feature.”
  • The company is working on a new display technology to address the challenges of retaining the S Pen.
Nearly half a decade after Samsung axed the iconic Galaxy Note series in favor of foldable models, the S Pen, one of its defining features, persists in the Galaxy S series. And despite Samsung’s repeated reduction of S Pen features, or limited attention while upgrading the Galaxy S26 Ultra, it’s not going anywhere, at least not anytime soon.

Won-Joon Choi, COO at Samsung’s Mobile Experience (MX) division, assured this in a recent interview with Bloomberg. Choi told the publication that Samsung has no plans to abandon the S Pen.

Choi said Samsung is actually working on new technology to keep it usable. Without revealing much about the development, the executive suggested that the company is working on a new display technology to address the challenges of retaining the S Pen.

We are working on a more advanced technology within the S Pen to come up with a new display structure so that the disadvantages of having S Pen are reduced.

S-Pen will remain one of the core technologies.

While it’s difficult to determine which technology the director is referring to, we suspect it involves building a touchscreen without a digitization layer, which is currently needed to detect stylus interactions and distinguish them from finger taps.

Notably, Samsung removed the digitalization layer from the Galaxy Z Fold 7 last year to make it extremely thin, which in turn led to the dropping of S Pen support for the foldable phone. However, the feature is rumored to return this year with the Galaxy Z “Wide” Fold, and we can expect Samsung to apply a similar technology to the Galaxy S Ultra phones as well if it proves feasible. However, we are yet to learn more details about this upgraded display from credible sources.
