The Proteas ended Day 1 of the second Test against India on 247-6 in Guwahati.
It was a tall order to win in Guwahati, especially with all the talk around the red field ahead of the second Test.
The Proteas won the toss and elected to bat first, on a bouncy pitch, with no major demons in the wicket and with a fair amount of grass cover.
Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton played sensibly for most of the first session.
They scored 82 but Jasprit Bumrah bowled Markram (38), who was looking for an extended straight drive on Tea’s strike.
The day’s game started at 9am local time, 30 minutes earlier than the first Test. This was in an attempt to make up for lost time at the end of the day when the sky darkened from 4pm local time.
As a result, the sessions were switched. This was the first time we covered a test during the tea break.
After the break, Kuldeed Yadav found Rickelton’s lead at the keeper for 35. All the hard work of the first session was compensated. South Africa was now 82-2.
Tristan Stubbs and Temba Bavuma took South Africa past the 150-run mark.
The Proteas went to lunch at 156-2 with Stubbs (32*) and Bavuma (36*).
After the break, Bavuma (41) tried to square Jadeja and found a diving Jaiswal at halfway. This ended an 84-run partnership. South Africa were reduced to 166-3.
Stubbs managed 49 but pushed Kuldeep to KL Rahul at slip. SA were 187-4.
The Proteas managed to get past 200, but Wiaan Mulder (13) also fell in the middle kick. SA was now 201-5.
The second new ball completed the solution for India. The Zorzi pushed Siraj to the keeper for 28, with not much play left in the day. SA was 246-6.
The referees called stumps with SA at 247-6. This was just a few balls after De Zorzi’s dismissal. Muthasamy was not out at 25.
South Africa would be upset if many of their batters got a start but failed to convert.
