We have still not seen our first real golf, but at least we have a real news! Ryder Cup Captains Keegan Bradley And Luke Donald have announced their respective teams for the first four -cushion session on Friday.
On location at Bethpage Black, our writers give their immediate reactions – from the biggest surprise to the most exciting match to the question of whether one party has already received an advantage.
Dylan Dethier: Okay gang, I will serve here as a host. We have just seen the combinations come true – this is what we have:
Friday Foursomes (All Times et)
7:10 am. Rahm / Hatton vs. Decchambeau / Thomas
7:26 am Aberg / Fitzpatrick vs. Scheffler / Henley
7:42 am McIlroy / Fleetwood vs. Morikawa / English
7:58 am Macintyre / HOVOLAND vs. Schaffel / Cantlay
Sitting for Team USA: Sam Burns, Ben Griffin, JJ Spaun, Cameron Young
Sitting for Team Europe: Rasmus Hojgaard, Shane Lowry, Justin Rose, Sepp Straka
1. Which competition are you the most enthusiastic to follow?
Sean bag: The first, duh! There will be fireworks, perhaps from the first swing of the event if DECHAMBEAU can control the 1st Green. But Vegas loves the duo of Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton, and with good reason.
James Colgan: That first competition has the chance to put an end to Western civilization before the majority of Bethpage Faithful has received their first cup of coffee. Holy hell, what a good time.
Fundamentally: If Bryson does not go into the first green, I jump on the media shuttle and go back to New Jersey. Rory and Tommy will also be a pleasure to look at, and I would like to see if Xander and P-Iice still have their match play magic. The shape of Xander is this week, puns, a large X-factor.
DESTHIER: Bryson is rightly the headliner. But that second game is such an interesting mix of styles and includes the undisputed world no. 1. Time to stress that Scheffler-Henley duo looked promising with the Presidents Cup. And if Team Europe steals a point in the second or fourth match, that can be a harbinger of an upset to come …
2. Are there surprising omissions – or inclusions?!
Bag: I really thought that New York’s own Cam Young would play as many matches as possible. He plays the best wave of his life and he uses the same ball as Deschambeau. Would imagine that he will go out early in the afternoon. The biggest surprise? For Datagolf’s fascinating optimum pairing loss, Morikawa / English is one of the worst possible attacks. (Depending on whom the first Tee -shot touches, they are the 130th or 132nd best out of 132.)
Colgan: Not necessary one talent Leaving away, but I was surprised to see Luke Donald splitting the Aberg/HOVOLAND coupling. That was duo So Freak good in Rome. I think many Golffans forget how important they were for European success in ’23. Maybe we’ll see them in the afternoon.
Basis: I still kept the hope that Keegan would reconsider his decision to hesitate to hesitate. No, to be honest, no big surprises here. Given a third of the American open team are Rookies, we thought we would see the veterinarians who led the opening sole.
DESTHIER: I had guessed that we would see Young of Griffin instead of Harris Engels – but I think that will be the case instead. However, Morikawa / English should be the largest underdogs of the first session. I also suspected that we would see Shane Lowry in four cushion. A bit remarkable: although Justin Rose is 7-2-1 in his square career, he did not play a foursomes session in Rome and it seems that he might not be playing here either.
3. Only on the basis of these matchups, which side has the first session benefit?
Bag: Light advantage for the euros, which play their literal eight best players. If the Americans win this session, this is a big explanation.
Colgan: Agreed, Sean. Big pressure immediately on the bat on Morikawa and Harris Engels – long seen as two of the more vulnerable Americans – not to be smoked by McIlroy/Fleetwood in that third group. It really feels like that first combination of Bryson/JT vs. Rahm/Hatton has the chance to set the tone for the entire cup.
Fundamentally: The US not Fall in an early hole, but yes, if I look at those names, it is not to give the edge of the paper to the euros. The shape of JT is worrying. In that opening match I definitely give Rahm and Hatton the lead.
DESTHIER: I would give the euros a slight lead and it seems that Vegas would do that too; The chances of the Americans went from -155 to -145 after the announcement. Recent history, however, would tell you that you should not count the home team in a fourths competition. Real answer? Gigantic shoulder picks.
4. Which players do you think all five sessions will go?
Bag: It’s a lot, but I saw all McIlroy, Rahm, Aberg, Fleetwood play five sessions. As for the Americans, it is Scottie Scheffler, Russ Henley and maybe Bryson Dechambeau.
Colgan: McIlroy, Fleetwood, Rahm, Scheffler, Decchambeau, Cantlay.
Basis: Scheffler, Scheffler and Scheffler.
DESTHIER: Scottie, Rory, Tommy, Rahm. I think we see a pretty balanced attack by the Americans.
5. You may have said this in other round tables, but just to be clear: which team wins and what is the final score?
Bag: The Europeans lead early. The Europeans lead in the middle. But the Americans lead. I will say that Europe leads 9-7 on Sunday and loses the in-depth struggle on Sunday. VS wins 15-13.
Colgan: I change my score forecast. 15.5-12.5 vs. The euros are 100 percent the better team, but the benefit of the home field is so important.
Fundamentally: [checks last week’s Tour Confidential] Europe 14.5, US 13.5, in a thriller for the centuries.
DESTHIER: It scares me to stand in line with these other two grapers, but I stay strong at 15.5-12.5 vs.
