Ryder Cup 101: History and how the competitions work for Bethpage Black

View some answers to frequently asked questions about the Ryder Cup:

What is the Ryder Cup?

The “Ryder” in Ryder Cup has nothing to do with the transport company. It is the surname of the man who originally devised the competition and gave the trophy, Samuel Ryder. An English businessman, he accepted golf at the age of 50 and was addicted. He started sponsoring several matches, and at the time (the 1920s) it was perhaps the greatest natural rivalry between American and British players. So the Ryder Cup was devised to draw American versus British pros. It was played for the first time in 1927 and competitions were held every two years.

The attacks of 11 September 2001 resulted in the postponement of the Ryder Cup of that year for a year and planning future competitions in equally numbered years. That went back to odd numbered years after the 2020 edition was postponed because of the COVID-19 Pandemie.

Where is the 2025 Ryder Cup?

This will be the 45th edition of the competitions and is disputed 26-28 September on the Black Course in Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, New York.

Wait, you said ‘British’ professionals. I thought this was us vs. Europe?

You are right. The Ryder Cup has not been the US versus Groot -Britain and Ireland for a while. Team GB & I were expanded to Europe in 1979. The idea, mainly promoted by Jack Nicklaus, was designed to make the competition more competitive (at the time the US led the series, 18-3-1) and b) making one of the most dynamic players of the era, Spain’s Seve Ballesteros, which is eligible.

How did Europe do in the Ryder Cup?

Very good. Since 1979 their record has been 12-9-1. Ballesteros became one of the largest Ryder Cup players ever and went 20-12-5 in eight Ryder Cup performances. He later served as the leader of the European team in 1997 (they won). Since the 1993 matches, Europe has not lost on a home floor in the Belfry in England and the title defender, after beating the US two years ago, is 16 1/2 to 11 1/2, in Marco Simone in Italy.

How are Ryder Cup teams determined?

It is a smooth situation, because Captains like to adjust how many picks they can have. This time the American captain Keegan Bradley had six automatic qualifications and then six selections. The European captain Luke Donald also had six qualifications and six choices. Both parties have their own points lists to determine the qualifications and then the captains complete their teams to their own discretion.

From Scottie Scheffler and the automatic qualifications to Keegan Bradley’s six Captain’s Picks, here is who will represent the US in Bethpage Black.

What is the Ryder Cup schedule?

The first two days are dedicated to team game. Every day will have a morning session and an afternoon session, with four games that attract two-man teams against each other in each session. On Friday and Saturday they play both foursomes (Alternate Shot) and Fourballs (Better Ball) in that order. The home captain (Bradley) determines which will be played in the morning and that is played in the afternoon. They play singles on Sunday.

How do foursomes and fourballs work?

The concepts are fairly simple. Foursomes (alternate shot): you and I are a team. I’m going. You hit the next shot. I hit the next and so on until we are in the hole. We alternate alternating tee-shots, where I lead on odd numbered holes, and you first hit just as numbered holes.

Fourballs (Better Ball): I play my ball and you play yours. What one of us makes the lower score on the hole, that is our team score. And if we bind, well, that’s our score. And if our score on that hole is lower than our opponents, we win the gap.

In both formats we play match game, so the general score is done by holes, not by strokes. Matches last until one team does not have enough remaining gaps to catch up.

If we beat our opponents, it doesn’t matter if we have done it by winning another hole than she (1 up), or excluding them (10 and 8), it’s just one point for our team. Bound competitions are worth a half point for each side. There are no extra holes in Ryder Cup competitions.

What does ’10 and 8 ‘mean?

It means that we have won the first 10 holes of the competition. Since there are only eight holes left in a standard 18-hole round, it is best that our opponents could do who win eight holes. So the game is stopped after the 10th hole and we win, 10 and 8. That almost never happens.

So there are eight games on Friday and eight more on Saturday. What about Sunday?

That is when everyone plays singles – 12 singles matches.

There are four games in each of the team sessions, which means that only eight boys can play. What about the other four?

Just like in any other team sport, they are on the “bank” and their teammates cheer. Choose which boys should play and which to sit is one of the most important responsibilities of a captain, together with choosing who plays with whom.

2023 Ryder Cup - Singles - Competitions

The Ryder Cup started in 1927 and has undergone a few changes. Here is a list of all the champions and the scores in every match.

How many points do you need to win the Ryder Cup?

Well, 16 team matches and 12 singles are the same as 28 total points, so 14 1/2. But there is a reservation.

What if there is a draw?

That is the reservation. Which team also won the previous Ryder Cup and therefore holds that the cup can retain it with a tie. Europe is the current cup holder, so it only needs 14 points to keep the cup.

How are competitions determined every session?

The line -ups must be returned in Ryder Cup rules civil servants by a certain deadline before the competitions start. For the morning matches of Friday, for example, the deadline is Thursday afternoon, before the opening ceremony (starting at 4 p.m. Edt). For the afternoon matches on Friday, it is just before the completion of the morning session. For the morning matches of Saturday, the deadline is an hour after playing on Friday. Saturday is comparable to determining the afternoon setup and Sunday Singles.

Each captain is also mandatory, at the same deadline on Saturday evening, to place the name of one player in a sealed envelope. That player does not play in Singles if a player is injured in the other team and cannot play.

Neither parties know what the combinations or teams are from the other side until they are sent from the rules office about five minutes after the aforementioned times.
