The biggest care when the Yankees Ryan McMahon of the Rockies took over before the Trade Deadline, was either his bat – inconsistent, even with the advantage of playing half of his matches in Colorado – enough on the third base.
After a solid start with the Yankees, those worries proved justified.
Although the Lefty-Swinging McMahon 8-out-20 struck with a few Doubles in its first six games as a Yankee, in recent weeks have been considerably worse.
And while he made several beautiful defensive plays on the third base in the 7-2 victory of Sunday at the Red Sox, he also hit nine strikeouts in his last 14 barriers.
He went against Boston’s serial final in the Bronx, he was stuck in an 8-out-53 rut, with 19 strikeouts in that period.
There was hope that McMahon could benefit from the short veranda of Yankee Stadium in the right field.
While he pulls the ball more than ever, he did not succeed in going deep in his first 52 record performances there.
The defense of McMahon on third base has at least been elite, as expected.
Nevertheless, an American League explorer, who praised the McMahon trade when it was made and believed that he would be rejuvenated by his new environment, is disappointed.
“That first week was what I expected,” said the scout about his short solid performance on the record. “But I thought he would be able to be more consistent in such a powerful line -up.”
McMahon made no apologies when he was asked about his failure to enter the game on Sunday.
“I just struggle and don’t feel great on the plate,” said McMahon. “I’m just going to try to compete. I don’t really care what I do, as long as we win games.”
There was not much in Colorado, and he looked forward to the intensity associated with playing in the Bronx.
“That part has been great,” said McMahon. “The energy feels every day in the stadium, you need that in the later months. They want to win badly here, and that is absolutely fun.”
He would just be part of it.
“I played the game for a long time and had even worse than this,” said McMahon. “I know this game can be [tough] Sometimes, so you have to roll with it and grind through it. That is what I am doing now and why I have blisters on my hands. I get this thing turned around. “
Hitting coach James Rowson tries to get him there, although the work he has done with McMahon so far has not been overly complicated.
“If you get a man in the middle season, you never want to go completely with a reconstruction of his swing,” said Rowson about McMahon, who is below $ 16 million until 2027 to $ 16 million. “You take his strengths and his strengths are good. You try to keep things easy to make it more comfortable.”
Rowson said he was impressed by McMahon’s attitude, as well as certain aspects of his attacking game.
“I love his athletics and the way the ball comes from his bat,” said Rowson. “He puts a load in a ball.”
