George Russell admits that his and Mercedes interests have been set out for the past six months and resulted in a time that has been “not the most insurance” for the future of him and teammate Kimi Antonelli, although he says he doesn’t feel under pressure to close a new deal.

The potential availability of Max Verstappen led to discussions that took place between team head Toto Wolff and the four -time world champion, in which Wolff informed the drivers of those conversations. Antonelli and Russell must both have a confirmation whether they will ride for Mercedes next year, but with a mandatory agreement and Wolff who has a hand in Russell’s management, the Brit admitted that the uncertainty was sometimes disturbing.

“For my entire career until last year, the team supported me so much and gave me such great opportunities,” said Russell. “Our goals are coordinated and what has been in the best interest of the team has also been in the best interest of me.

“Now, of course, these last six months have been a very unique situation in which I have no enormous power in that kind of agreement, and perhaps the interests have not been aligned for some time, which of course has been at risk for these past six months. But then it was my job to perform and reduce that risk.

‘So I don’t know [if taking management into my own hands would be beneficial]To be honest. I don’t want it to come. I still trust Toto and I still trust the team that they will always support me as long as I perform. So I have to concentrate on that. But of course, for both Kimi and me, these recent months are not the most insured for our future, and that has just been a bit contradictory. “

Despite that view, Russell says that he is not worried about whether a deal is not completed before the summer vacation, and that waiting for confirmation has reduced its impatience.

‘Not really, no [it hasn’t been tough getting hold of Wolff]”He said,” because they eventually hold the cards because of the situation in which we are with the management agreement. So they have not been in a hurry to sign Kimi or I because we have this long -term, compelling deal.

“But the truth is that I never feared losing my chair and that did not even have been on the table this year, although of course you of course [media] Like to make a lot of it.

“Maybe 12 months ago I was a bit more anxious and I wanted to sort or confirm something for ’26; maybe six months ago I felt the same thing, but now I perform better than ever, I still have the feeling that I have more.

“I have waited for so long and I think I want to get through this weekend, I want to go on holiday next week and enjoy the break, and there is no time pressure on my side, there is no time pressure of the team side. So if we reach an agreement, we will get it done, but it must be right in both ways.”

Although Racer understands that conversations are positive about a multi -year extension, Russell says that he is open to a shorter deal if it gives him the best chance of being “he said.” It was clearly a bit of a unique situation that we have been in the past six months.

“For my part I want to win – that is all I care about. More than money, more than the number of days of sponsorship, more than anything, I want to win and that is the most important thing for me in my future.”
