The eighth edition of the Next Gen ATP Finals, presented by PIF, will light up Jeddah later this month, when the world’s best players aged 20 and under on the ATP Tour will compete for the season crown in Saudi Arabia.

Following the PIF ATP Live Race To Jeddah, the field has been determined and the ATP on Wednesday announced the rules and advanced innovations for the 2025 event, which will be held from December 17 to 21.

Read all about the rules and innovations for the Next Gen ATP Finals 2025, presented by PIF, below.

SCORING

  • First-to-4, Best-of-5 set scoring: Each match will be the best of 5 tiebreak sets. Each set consists of the first to 4 games with a margin of 2 games and a tie-break (first to 7 points with a margin of 2) played at 3-3. Each game is played according to the no-ad scoring format, with the server choosing the service court.

    CHANGES

  • There will be no change of ends after the first game.

  • Players switch ends and sit for 90 seconds after the first three games have been played, again when the set score reaches 3:2 (i.e., after two more games in the set), and then again at the end of the set (regardless of the final set score).
  • Players switch sides after every six points in the tiebreak.
  • Players sit for 90 seconds at the end of the set, reduced from 120 seconds.

    RULES INITIATIVES

  • Warm-up: players warm up on the court for 3 minutes.

  • Ball change: after every 7 games.
  • Serve Shot Clock: A maximum of 8 seconds are allowed between the first and second serves. A shot clock shows the time elapsed between the first and second serves.
  • Time between points: The time between points is reduced from 25 seconds to 15 seconds if a point is less than three shots (e.g. 2 shots = 15 seconds; 3 shots = 25 seconds).
  • Free movement of fans: During the first three matches of the match, free movement is allowed in the stadium. After the first free matches, fans will be allowed to move freely, except in a limited number of areas behind the baseline in direct player view. The movement of a spectator(s) in the designated free movement areas does not constitute a legitimate break in the shot clock.
  • Referee’s Chair: A lower referee’s chair will continue to be used to reduce visual interference for fans in the arena.

    INNOVATION INITIATIVES

In-arena data analysis: There are more match statistics and analysis available to fans, players and coaches than ever before. The following data is displayed in the arena:

  • Traditional tennis statistics including aces, serve percentages and break point performance
  • Player performance based on rally length
  • Player shot quality broken down by serve, return, forehand, backhand and movement.
  • Match Insights data showing which player has been on the attack the most, who has won more points on offense (“Conversion Score”) and who has won the most points on defense (“Steal Score”)

The data will also be available to the players’ coaches on the court through ATP’s performance analytics platform, ATP Tennis IQ Powered by PIF, as well as the provision of video footage tagged with match data available after the match.
