As the Los Angeles Lakers continue to get healthier, Rui Hachimura could remain in a reserve role, according to Dan Woike of The Athletic.

The player opened the season as a starter in each of his first 27 appearances before moving to the bench in the past seven games.

While it could be helpful to establish himself as a regular starter as free agency approaches this summer, Hachimura said his focus is elsewhere and he feels comfortable doing what the team needs.

“A lot of people think about stats and stuff, but for me it’s like winning. That’s going to help us get everyone paid,” he said. “… And especially with this second device, I also get more touches. … I don’t mind that. It’s more about: who finishes the game? Or who plays more? For me, that’s more important.”

Woike notes that Austin Reaves could return later this week after missing time since Christmas Day with a strained calf.

That could give head coach JJ Redick the opportunity to prioritize defense in the starting lineup, potentially turning to players like Jake LaRavia or Marcus Smart while keeping Hachimura on the bench.

While no lineup decisions have been made yet, Redick praised Hachimura as “easy” to work with and noted his flexibility.

“I love my role here,” Hachimura said. “I do the things I like to do here. I just have to do whatever it takes to win for the team.”
