Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has hinted that midfield duo Mason Mount and Bruno Fernandes could be back for the next Premier League match against Burnley.

Amorim made this stunning revelation after United’s 1-1 draw with Leeds at Elland Road.

United and Leeds draw

Matheus Cunha got on the scoresheet on Sunday afternoon to rescue a point for United against their arch-rivals.

The Brazilian produced a good finish after being swept in by substitute Joshua Zirkzee, canceling out Brenden Aaronson’s opener.

Amid a defensive-minded line-up weakened by injuries and AFCON absences, Matheus Cunha admirably shouldered United’s attacking burden and delivered a strong performance.

He could have scored a second but was denied by the post.

There were also chances for Leny Yoro, Diogo Dalot and Patrick Dorgu in the first half, but none of the three managed to find the back of the net. Ultimately, United had to settle for a share of the points with their Yorkshire rivals.

Amorim spoke to the media after the final whistle and gave his assessment of the performance. He also provided an update on Mount and Fernandes, noting that he expects the pair to play a role in Wednesday’s match against Burnley at Turf Moor.

Amorim speaks

Amorim told this to TNT Sports [as quoted by the BBC]”I think we played well. I think we had more control in this game than we showed against Wolves. That’s important because it shows how you can prepare for this week with the mistakes we learned from the last game.”

“We controlled Leeds, on the set pieces and the second balls, they are very quick in front. We controlled it well.”

“We had our chances to win the game. We lose games on the details: the Leeds goal, we control the game and then one kick of the ball in transition, but we managed to get back into the game.”

“Last year it would be completely different. This year we have more control over the games than last year, but we are frustrated when we don’t win.”

He said of Leeds’ goal: “Ayden and Leny are very young, but that’s not because of that. When you play so well for 90 minutes and you make a mistake, that can happen. If you look at the game, we had chances to score the second and no-one would talk about the Leeds goal.”

About Cunha, the Portuguese coach noted: “Not only him, but Josh [Zirkzee] played well in the twenty minutes he had, Ben [Sesko] The game linked well today, Ugarte shows that he has more to offer and I am very satisfied.”

“If these guys play well, we always have a chance to win the game.”

Amorim continued: “United is one of the best clubs in the world. If you are here and you concentrate on another club, then there is something wrong with you. Just concentrate on the game and prepare with the players we have.”

“We have more too. I expect more minutes for Fernandes and Mount, so we have more players who can help us.”

Amorim also spoke to BBC Match of the Day and explained: “In the Premier League it’s hard to find a match where you’re satisfied with a draw, that’s why it’s a great competition.”

“If you see the game, overall we had more control. We created more chances and controlled well, so when you watch the game you feel the frustration that we had the chance to win. It’s a tough game in difficult conditions.”

“The game plan was to understand what we did wrong against Wolves. We improved a lot because we were in the right positions. We improved from the last game.”

“It’s strange because they started a little bit better in the second half. When we are in control we have to be focused on every detail. We know against West Ham that we are in control, and after one stoppage there was a goal. We have to be connected all the time.”

Amorim also called on his players to keep their emotions in check as he pointed out that United deserved more from the match.
