Cristiano Ronaldo is still “hungry to be the best”, according to Roberto Martinez, who described the value of his captain in the Portugal team.
Ronaldo is a key figure for Portugal and scored twice when they opened their world cup qualifying location with a 5-0 win over Armenia on Saturday.
Those goals brought his count until 942 goals for Club and Land in his career, with 140 of those who come for Portugal.
Ronaldo, who turned 40 in February, has shown no signs of stops there, with the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico in his sights, after he had never won the tournament.
He recently signed a new contract with Al-Nassr, led his future to the Saudi Pro League club until 2027 and won a second Nations League title with Portugal in June.
But Martinez denied that Ronaldo’s biggest goal is to win the World Cup, with his most important focus only on the near future.
“He lives from day to day as a young player who is playing for the first time,” Martinez told Hungary for Tuesday’s qualifying match.
“The way he devotes himself, the freshness he has every day. He is a winner. He is hungry to be the best.
“The World Cup? He does the best he can; he has no long -term goals. He wants to be the best every day. His focus is on the daily day.
