Rolls-Royce’s Nuclear Innovation

In an important step towards a revolution in the production of clean energy, Rolls-Royce Small Modular Reactors (SMR) has a crucial memorandum of agreement (MOU) inked with Czech Engineering Powerhouse JS.

The core of the initiative is Rolls-Royce’s innovative 470 Megawatt-Electric (MWE) under printing water reactor design. Compact and efficiently, every SMR module measures only 16 meters by 4 meters, but generates low-cabbage fabric electricity that is equivalent to more than 150 onshore wind turbines.

Think of those Chris Bowen!

Wind and solar energy not the cheapest

Chris Bowen naturally believes that solar energy and wind, supported by battery transmission, is the cheapest form of energy. This is despite the fact that electricity prices have risen since it becomes ‘green’. In 2022 the electricity accounts increased by 18 percent, in 2023 they increased by 15 percent, and in 2024 they rose by 21 percent and in 2025 so far they are 13 percent higher. Because we are going to green, our electricity accounts have risen by a huge 85 percent.

Chris Bowen quotes ‘Independent’ research of the Commonwealth Scientific Industrial Research Organization (CSiro) for his claim that green energy is the cheapest, although the Cyros Gencost report of 2024-25 admitted that coal is cheaper than renewable energy sources (1). And that Gencost report also became co-author of the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), whose membership is 40 percent players in the industry, including wind and solar energy producers (2).

The CSiro, which is partly financed by the government, is reportedly also 50 percent financed by the private industry. One industrial financier is indeed Gisera (Social and Environmental Research Alliance of the gas industry), which in turn is funded by Australia Pacific LNG, QGC, Santos and Origin Energy. Other CSiro financiers are reportedly AGL (partly owned by Mike Cannon-Brooks), Vestas (a wind turbine maker) and Tesla (a battery manufacturer).

Nuclear energy – A globally proven source of reliable baseload -power

The collaboration between Rolls Royce and Skoda focuses on the production of important components for Rolls-Royce’s advanced SMR fleet, indicating a major extension in the international supply chain of the company

With ambitions to implement up to 3 Gigawatt (GW) of nuclear capacity in the Czech Republic alone, the deal underlines the growing momentum behind modular nuclear technology as a cornerstone of sustainable energy transitions worldwide.

Built on proven technology, these reactors promise a lifespan of at least 60 years, which supplies stable, affordable and emission -free electricity to around one million houses per unit.

What distinguishes them from traditional nuclear plants? A modular construction model in which 90 percent of the reactor is prefabricated in controlled factory environments and then sent for Swift-Assemblage on site. This approach drops costs, minimizes delays and reduces the total project risks.

Rolls-Royce SMR, now 20 percent owned by Czech Nuclear Operator čez (parent company of ŠKODA JS), regards this as the basis for long-term cooperation.

De Mou builds on a flurry of recent supply chain output. Rolls-Royce SMR also works together with another Czech entity, újv řež, for rigorous analysis, testing and evaluation of critical SMR components.

In the meantime, on the English channel, a multi-million pound deal with the British arm of Curtiss-Wright (formerly Ultra Energy) is protected the design and delivery of non-programmable various reactor security systems. These robust, safety-critical backups use proven electronic technology-free of microprocessors or software to close the reactors independently if necessary.

In June 2024, the British government Rolls Royce tapped the preferred technology for the inaugural SMR fleet of the country, aimed at 1.5 GW output – enough to reinforce about three million houses.

And accelerate the plans. Contracts are expected to be signed later this year, in addition to forming a special development company and selecting sites, with grid connections for the mid -2030s and a final investment decision for 2029.

In order not to be surpassed, in October 2024, čez Rolls-Royce selected for a maximum of 3 GW in the Czech Republic, which positions the company as a leader in Europe. Rolls-Royce claims that it is up to 18 months ahead than rivals in regulations processes that the company positions as the current world leader in SMR Tech.

While the world is struggling with (and Australia is entangled), the double challenges of energy breach and climate change, the SMR program of Rolls-Royce offers a compelling solution: reliable baseload power that can be implemented emission-free and faster than ever before.
