Danny Rohl was happy to see his Rangers team win ugly after Emmanuel Fernandez’s goal beat Hibernian to take them to third place in the Scottish Premier League.

Rangers won a match without goalscoring quality 1-0, with Fernandez providing the decisive moment when he headed home Dujon Sterling’s cross in the 35th minute.

Substitute Djeidi Gassama had a possible second goal disallowed for offside, while Warren O’Hora came closest to Hibernian with a header that was cleared off the line.

The win moves Rangers, who have suffered a terrible start to the season under Russell Martin, to within nine points of leaders Hearts – who they face on Sunday – with a game in hand.

The Gers are three points behind second-placed Celtic after playing an extra game, although the Bhoys have lost their first three games under Wilfried Nancy in all competitions.

Speaking to BBC Scotland after Monday’s match, Rohl said: “I’m happy for the group today, it was an exceptional effort.

“It wasn’t always the best football, but we find a way to win games.

“We now have five clean sheets; I would like us to be more clinical.

“I’m happy with the points, but of course we have to improve. It’s step by step and for me it’s about winning games.”

“The win was deserved. We didn’t play every part of the game where you think ‘it’s great’, but if you keep a clean sheet and are clinical in the moment you deserve to win.”

Rangers earned their victory after firing 19 shots to Hibs’ eight, also scoring 2.18 expected goals (xG) to their visitors’ 0.39.
