Rockies to hire Tommy Tanous as assistant general manager

The Colorado Rockies announced the hiring of Tommy Tanous will serve as assistant general manager under president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta and general manager Josh Byrnes.

Tanous has been a longtime director of the New York Mets organization, first joining them in 2011. Most recently, he served as their vice president and special advisor to president of baseball operations David Stearns. He also has an extensive background in both professional and amateur scouting, serving as the Mets’ scouting director from 2012-2016. He also worked extensively with Paul DePodesta during the latter’s time with the Mets under then-general manager Sandy Alderson, where they collaborated in coordinating the Mets’ draft.

“We are very pleased to have Tommy join our front office,” DePodesta said in a press release. “Tommy brings a wealth of knowledge in coaching, amateur scouting, professional scouting, international and special assignment work from his time in baseball, and I look forward to using his experience and rare ability to connect with people to help build organizational consistency at all levels of our operation.”

Prior to his time with the Mets, Tanous worked in the scouting departments of the Toronto Blue Jays, Texas Rangers and Milwaukee Brewers.

According to Thomas HardingAssistant general manager of scouting Marc Gustafson and director of player development Chris Forbes are expected to remain in their current roles.
