Robert Whittaker confirms return in June and teases light heavyweight move

Robert Whittaker has announced he will return to the Octagon in June, with a strong chance to debut at light heavyweight after a series of difficult weight cuts at middleweight.

Speak with Ariel Helwani confirmed his return timeline on February 2, 2026, explaining his reasoning for potentially switching divisions. “I’ll be back in June,” Whittaker said. “I don’t want to divide my attention between the spacecraft, the fighting, my next fight, and broadcasting and traveling. I want to be locked up.”

The former middleweight champion has been away from competition since his split-decision loss to Reinier de Ridder at UFC on ABC 9 on July 26, 2025. That was Whittaker’s second straight loss following a first-round submission loss to Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 308 in October 2024.

Whittaker revealed his hiatus was intentional, citing the birth of his sixth child in November and the need to step away from the sport. “I knew my wife was due around November and I wanted to take some time to separate myself from the game a little bit,” he said. “The last few camps haven’t been super fun. I feel like the divided attention doesn’t give the game enough respect.”

The Australian fighter explained that cutting weight has become increasingly difficult and described himself as “90%” committed to moving up to light heavyweight. “The last few cuts have been tough,” Whittaker explains. “I know the growing trend is, ‘Rob is a small middleweight,’ but I’m just short and have stubby arms. I’m falling short for the division anyway. So there’s not much difference if I move up.”

With a running weight of about 235 pounds between camps, Whittaker detailed the toll of the cuts to 185 pounds. “I just feel so weak at the end of the 85 camp. And then I don’t eat anything the week of the fight to get to a point where I can cut off the water. It takes a lot of the fun out of it,” he said.

Even though it is 90% Whittaker was confident about the move to light heavyweight and admitted he could still be talked out of it. However, his reasoning goes further than just weight savings. “With the changes in fighting style, I think the changes would be better from a heavier position,” he noted. “My reasoning is also that light heavyweights still knock each other out. Even if they are really light heavyweights. Nothing changes. Just make sure you don’t get hit.”

Whittaker expressed interest in participating in the UFC’s historic White House card, scheduled for June 14, 2026. “I think the White House card is around that time. It would be great to be a part of that,” he said. “Otherwise, let’s see what else happens.”

The current light heavyweight division is led by a champion Alex Pereira, with top candidates such as Jiri Prochazka, Carlos Ulberg and Magomed Ankalaev. Whittaker believes his resume and experience would position him for a title shot within a fight or two in the new division.

Before locking himself in camp, Whittaker plans to give himself three to four months of preparation. “I’m going to lock in, give myself a good three months or three, four months to work on some new things,” he said. “I want to do the next fight differently because people have looked at my style for too long. I think it’s time for a change.”

“I still get FOMO when I see these guys walking out and doing their thing. I feel like an impostor in the station. I should be there when I walk out.”
