A former UFC champion middleweight seems uncertain about his path back to gold after his recent setback at UFC Abu Dhabi, but still has competition-based motivations in the future. Robert Whittaker was the former champion in question, with the previous 185 pound title holder expressing this thought during a recent interview with Submission radio.

The 34-year-old recently delivered a closely split decision to the former two-division title farmer Reinier de Ridder of one championship in July. At a time when the middleweight hierarchy has been stacked as if it has not been for years, with threatening High-Stakes title Eliminator-Style attacks with RDR who bumps with Anthony Hernandez at UFC Vancouver, as well as the UFC PARIS-Headliner this weekend with Nassourdine.

Think about where he perceives that he is currently in the weight category, said Whittaker [via Bloody Elbow]”

“The belt is at the time of a pipe dream at the moment after losing ‘RDR’. It is another loss, it pushes me much further back than I want to be from the title, to the path where I wanted to end up. So, now, my goals, my trajectory has changed quite a bit.”

“I have worked out that I want a few more fights, I want to enjoy the journey. I want to enjoy the fighting. I want to enjoy the camp process. I want to enjoy Vechtweek, I want to enjoy the fight itself. I want my family to be part of it … That is now my biggest goal.”
