When celebrated track stars Robby and Josette Andrews aren’t traveling the world for events like the recent one World Athletics Championships in Tokyothey love passing on their passion and wisdom to the next crop of brilliant runners.
The couple will return to the famous location in November The Arsenal, in New Yorkand they couldn’t be happier to be back on the ‘fastest track in the world’.
The 2025 Track & Field Camp at The Armory connects high school track and field athletes with professional athletes and coaches for a full day of instruction in various disciplines such as pole vault, hurdles and throws. For those looking to learn new skills for running, Josette & Robby Andrews will help you get moving in the middle distance. Robbie is an Olympian and NCAA champion in the 800 meters, now retired and focused on coaching, while Josette regularly represents Team USA and could very well be part of the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
“I grew up 15 minutes away from The Armory,” says Josette, who just returned home and competed in the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, finishing in sixth place. “In high school, my cross country races were at The Armory, which is really special. That was the first place I ever hosted my first indoor track meet.”
Josette even made her professional debut there. The Armory is an ongoing part of her sporting journey. Earlier this year, Josette came second in the Millrose Games Women’s 3000m, and has finished second in the Wanamaker Mile with future victory firmly in her sights. Apparently there’s nothing like competing at The Armory. The fans are closer to the action and the acoustics only add to the excitement.
Josette’s husband and fellow athlete-turned-coach, Robby Andrews says M&F that he has more in common with his wife than marriage. Robby grew up in a family of runners and was also a frequent visitor to The Armory before running his own races there. Robby set two national records at the famed track in high school, as well as a national title. “So I had some very special moments there,” he reflects.
Robby and Josette Andrews reunite for their first camp at The Armory
While the Andrews have toured and conducted several running clinics, this will be their debut full-day session together. “This will be our first real camp experience,” says Robby M&Fwho explains that when young athletes are really involved in the sport, he gets a kick out of helping them progress. Josette agrees, noting that the best way to find the track discipline that suits you best is to try as many types as possible.
“When I was younger, I loved every sport, right?” shares Josette. “I was always the kid running around outside, playing kickball with the boys, and I just wanted to be outside and do all kinds of things. I think the biggest thing about this camp is that you get that exposure and the opportunity to be involved and learn something that you can take with you, and whether you continue running or play another sport, take something from this camp and apply it to what you want to get better at.”
Once a sporting discipline is chosen, Josette says consistency with training and practice is key. “You see the most success with consistency, over the years, and that’s hard to see at a young age because sometimes you want immediate results,” says Josette. “So if I can show them my own journey by telling them what I’ve experienced as a result of continually showing up, the more you show up, the more you show up, you’ll have that breakthrough.
Trying everything before choosing a discipline is a concept that Robby wholeheartedly agrees with. “Everyone sprints. Who doesn’t want to be the fastest person in the world?” he notes, but Robby is also keen to encourage young athletes to try every event, rather than be distracted by what they might see on TV.
During the upcoming camp at The Armory, Robby and Josette will be able to complement each other in the way they approach positive education. As an active competitor, Josette often still finds herself in the thick of the action as she assesses what she did right or wrong during a race, while Robby must balance his desire to point out the good and not-so-good points without burdening his wife. One aspect of training that both Andrews agree on is the importance of drills and practicing cues until it all becomes second nature.
“The more you do it, the smoother it will go over time,” Josette explains. “I think I see myself in these kids a little bit more now,” adds Robby, who says he has learned to become more patient as he gets older. This elite relationship has endured the highs and lows of a life in the sport, and the detail-oriented duo hope to help those who attend camp reach their full potential.
