Risking range of Flames can convince Andersson to sign again – the hockey writers Calgary Flames latest news, analysis and more

In an interesting turn of events, Pierre Lebrun reported on TSN Insider Trading on Tuesday, Rasmus Andersson is still a likely commercial candidate prior to the NHL trading deadline. At the same time, the door is not completely closed for an extension with the Calgary Flames.

Will Andersson probably still be traded?

The feeling has been all summer that Andersson will be moved. Even Flames Captain Mikael Backlund publicly stated that a trade was inevitable. And there was a moment when it seemed as if the defender was on his way to the door.

Lebrun reports that almost a deal has been closed on the Vegas Golden Knights – a team where Andersson is said to be willing to extend his contract – but the trade has not been extradited. For whatever reason (probably Mitch Marner), Vegas continued. They can visit him again, but nothing feels next. That has left the flames to either find or wait another trading partner, which will return Anderson this season.

Lebrun said: “… And here he is, and everyone is an adult in the room. He is ready to play his best for the flames, and the flames are happy to have him back. In the meantime, neither of them wants to close the door completely on an extension.”

Could this lead to an expansion in Calgary?

Lebrun also added an interesting wrinkle to his report, which suggested that there was a scenario in which the Flames and Andersson decided not to do any exchange at all. In that case an extension was a possibility.

However, that expansion would be unique for the flames, because they are the only team that can offer realistic that Andersson might be looking for.

Lebrun explains:

“For now, what the team has told that Andersson is, hey, let’s start the year, let’s see how things go here, and then we may visit this again at a given moment. I think Andersson might listen if there is an eight -year offer on the table, but now I don’t think the team is ready to go there.

Unless he is first traded and drawing, whether there is a drawing and trade involved elsewhere in his move, the best Andersson on the open market is a seven-year contract with another team. Calgary leaves that behind the club that can give him the eighth year, it sounds like he might be looking. However, there is a risk for the flames, given its age and the fact that an eight -year -old deal Andersson would bring in his mid -thirty.

Has this been discussed between the two parties? Is Andersson open to that kind of deal when Calgary is willing to offer him for so long of a period?

The flames would take a huge risk

Said Andersson In a recent interview: “I grew up in the city, and I enjoyed it every second … Now it is the business side of it. Is it smart of me to sign again after last season? I don’t know … I just have to get hot and worry about myself.”

In other words, Andersson does not sound like he is going to draw during the 2025-26 season. That would mean that the flames should be self -confident in both an eight -year -old deal and the fact that Andersson would be open to sign it after the Trade Deadline. That is a gamble, one that can be counterproductive if the flames keep him, he chooses not to stay and walks away for no return on July 1.
