Smit has established himself as a permanent fixture at AZ much faster than many expected. He primarily operates as a central or defensive midfielder and despite his age has made over thirty senior league appearances, contributing goals and assists in both the Eredivisie and European competition.
During the current season he has started the majority of AZ’s league matches, logging over 1,500 minutes. His performances are particularly impressive given his role, with strong numbers in chance creation, goals and assists compared to others in his position in the division.
These performances have reinforced the chasing clubs’ belief that Smit has the technical and tactical profile to adapt to the Premier League, but if the chasing clubs really want to sign Smit at the end of the season, they will have to pay a lot of money.
What did Ferdinand say?
“Elliot Anderson, I would love to have him at the football club, 100 percent,” said the former United and England defender. His energy, his physicality… I think he would be a great addition. He knows the competition.
“Adam Wharton, I talked about him. Maybe he looks too much like Kobbie Mainoo. We would be missing a bit of physicality in midfield, if maybe it was him.
“I would probably lean towards Elliot Anderson this season, given the way he has played. His attributes would match and suit someone like Kobbie Mainoo if he starts next season, a little better.
“There are others on the market too, some young ones,” Ferdinand continued. Kees Smit, I like him a lot. If you don’t know who he is, go check him out, guys! Kees Smit is a player.
‘He is a young midfielder, he can actually do a little bit of everything and he is performing at a very good level.’
To have some of the biggest clubs chasing this young man just shows the talent he has, and the player they all think he could become in the coming seasons if he develops at the pace he is at now.
The summer window is just a few months away, there will be plenty of time for all the big clubs to try and sign Smit, and he could even decide to sign a new contract with his current club, but there will be much more speculation to come.
However, it will be interesting to see where he ends up Manchester United will pay whatever it takes to get him signed, if they really want the kid.
