Research shows that a slew of users have successfully converted their families to one smartphone brand

Chances are that many members of your family use smartphones from multiple manufacturers. In mine we have a mix of Samsung, Xiaomi and HONOR. While all of these devices are powered by Android, there are some OEM quirks that make communication between the devices more clunky than it should be in specific scenarios. As a tech enthusiast, why not provide guidance and encourage them to purchase devices from one company?

It has some benefits, as my colleague Rita El Khoury discovered. Its “Pixel Family” now makes it easier to find and fix problems on devices, ensures devices update much more smoothly, and gives you Google’s brilliant backup and restore features – a must for those less savvy than us.

You can of course do this with any manufacturer, not just Google, and we wondered if you’d tried something similar in your household. That’s why we conducted a reader survey, solicited input from our community, and the answers are now available below.

We received over 2,000 votes for this survey, and it’s surprising how many readers have tried this challenge. In fact, 58.2% of respondents are in the process of switching family members to one brand, have tried and failed, or have succeeded. True, the article invites those previously interested in the topic to vote, but it is worth noting that the concept is much more popular than initially thought.

A total of 34.6% of readers successfully completed the major brand migration, which is quite a remarkable achievement. As Rita explains in her article, during the upgrade she was able to transfer older phones to family members, making the process a little easier.

Commentary bimboy201 specifically explains that this is also their strategy:

I end up doing a version of this where I justify an upgrade for myself so I can shake hands with my mother-in-law. She doesn’t mind at all as long as I help her when she needs it and she has a phone that works.

Reader Stevenmbadams repeats this strategy:

I do the same. My mother-in-law has a Galaxy S21 that has stopped receiving updates, so it’s time to move her to a Pixel. My son has a Motorola G 5G and I’m going to buy him a Pixel Pro for the better camera. Both my wife and I have 8 Pros and these are the first devices that we have kept past the 2 year mark and love them. Only Pixels for us.

If you’re in my situation, where my parents’ phones are brand new and don’t need to be replaced, it’s a little trickier.

Interestingly enough, it looks like Pixels or Samsungs aren’t the only route. Reader Alistair Parsons’ family uses a different brand entirely:

My family all have POCO phones because of price and fame. Most of my clients and family have AnyDesk on their phone for remote support.

Notably, a much smaller voting share still attempts to convert family members, with 14.7% of respondents currently enjoying this venture. They should probably hold on, though, as only 8.9% of voting readers have tried and failed. The survey results suggest that the success rate for this process is quite high.

That said, 41.8% of readers “don’t see the need” to migrate family members to one brand. This makes it the only option that received the most votes.
