Richards considers Formby option for exciting Upon Tweed | At The Races

Nicky Richards is in no hurry with his exciting and undefeated hurdler Upon Tweed.

The five-year-old won his only bumper run by 18 and a half lengths in February, beating a horse who came out and has since won twice over fences at Conman John.

Upon Tweed himself has turned his hand to hurdling with great promise, winning his debut at Ayr in November by eight and a half lengths and returning to the same track a month later to triumph again over the same two-mile run.

“He’s great, it doesn’t bother him. There’s not much for him now until Boxing Day, so we’ll see how the Formby goes,” Richards said of Eddie Melville’s gelding.

“I’m not keen on putting it deep into the ground again, it is an option, but there is no panic and no rush.

“Everyone has dreams and the dream is to make him a top class horse, hopefully over time that will become a reality.

“I love him, and we’ve been working on it for a long time and we’re going to take him step by step and hope that by the end of his career people will say, ‘wow, what a horse that was.’

“We don’t immediately take the fastest route with our horses, we just let him take us on the journey.

“We don’t have any fancy plans set in stone. The Formby is about the only race for him, but we’re in no rush. He’s a big, nice horse at the start of his career and we’ll look after him.”
