The voting coach is selective about where he spends his creative time and admits that there is not much money in writing and producing songwriting.
The voice Coach Richard Marx has written 14 #1 hits about Pop, Rock, Country and R&B, and is one of only two American artists – besides Michael Jackson – with #1 singles in four different decades.
But more recently he devotes less time to songwriting and producing with 2022 as his latest album, appropriately entitled Songwriter.
“For the once I write a song with someone, but it is usually someone I know with, or someone I have worked with. Kenny Loggins has just completed a documentary about his career, and he asked me to write the theme song with him. But Kenny Loggins and I am almost 40 years old, and he is still one of my idols.
“So we just wrote something pretty special together. But I don’t really do too much, between all the touring that I do and also just enjoy my life.
“I’m going to be honest with you. Part of it is that there is really no more money in it. There is not much reward for spending time. If I start locking myself in a room and spend days and days for writing and producing someone in front, no payment, I would rather walk on the beach between performances. I have written enough songs.
But he loved his time The Voice Australiaimpressed by the level of talent and the team he has collected.
“I don’t want to mention names. I will just say that there are two women and two men who are just as good as everyone I have ever heard in a show like this,” he says.
“One of them, in particular, is really different from someone I have ever heard, only in terms of their uniqueness. Without giving away too much, there is a combination between their age and their sound, which is just so attractive. You don’t expect that voice from that face.
“It’s a bit like the first time I heard Josh Groban during a charity event before he had a record deal. He was about 19, and he came out and sang a operation number. It was just a bit like:” How does that voice come from that face? It’s just ridiculous! “
