Richard Keys has talked about Newcastle United.
The former Sky Sports presenter on the controversy surrounding the use of technology.
Premier League VARS and on-pitch referees making decisions.
Richard Keys about last weekend.
With special mention of Bruno Guimaraes’ ‘Olimpico’ goal against Burnley, straight from a corner.
Richard Keys writes in his personal way blogging – December 8, 2025:
“We can’t do it well with the technology we currently use.
“Newcastle’s first should have been disallowed as Anthony Gordon clearly interfered with Burnley’s goalkeeper.
“Of course, Brighton’s equalizer was preceded by a flawless handball and why did Antony Taylor need VAR to give Leeds a flawless handball?
“He doesn’t see anything? It’s been two weeks in a row now that he’s needed the technology to clear up something we’ve all seen.”
My thoughts
We all know that Richard Keys is always on a mission to annoy as many people as possible, but it’s no surprise that many Burnley fans say the same.
Did Richard Keys make a point on this occasion?
I saw what happened at St James’ Park at the time and watched replays countless times. Both to revisit Bruno’s brilliant strike AND to take a close look at what happened between Anthony Gordon and Martin Dubravka.
Now I’m happy to admit after games that I think Newcastle United made a positive decision that they shouldn’t have made. I don’t understand the mentality of fans of any club who will refuse to admit it when the match officials do something wrong in your favor. When I say that Richard Keys is right and that Anthony Gordon did commit a foul, my admission does not mean that Newcastle’s goal and victory will be disallowed!
As it happens, for me there was absolutely nothing wrong with what Anthony Gordon did. All teams put at least one player as close to the goalkeeper as possible and if you watch the replays, Dubravka tries to push Gordon out of the way and the Newcastle player simply pushes his body against it. In short, when the corner is turned, Anthony Gordon just stands there, he has no obligation to get out of Dubravka’s way at all.
I think it’s also quite striking that there is virtually no reaction from the Burnley players when it comes to claiming a foul. Especially Martin Dubravka himself, it seems to me that he just seems upset that he didn’t handle the corner in a better way.
