The Braves signed Rolddy Munoz in the same 2017-2018 international free agent class as his twin brother Roddery, netting him a $20,000 signing bonus – or $10,000 less than his brother.
What were the expectations?
After spending most of 2024 in Double-A after initially being in High-A, the expectation for Munoz this year was to pitch in Triple-A and perhaps get a chance to help the big league club in the bullpen at some point in the season.
Results 2025
The 2025 season was a bit of a roller coaster for Munoz. He opened the year back in Double-A, but was promoted to Triple-A at the end of May. In late July, he was sent back to Columbus for a month before returning to Gwinnett. After just two appearances with Gwinnett for the second time, he earned a big league call-up that lasted three games in September before ending in Gwinnett.
He dominated in Columbus, pitching to a 2.11 ERA and 1.33 WHIP over 38.1 innings in 25 appearances. He struck out 34 and walked 23 there. At Gwinnett, he had a 4.15 ERA and 1.25 WHIP over 21.2 innings in 16 games, striking out 25 in his 10 walks. Combined in the minors, he had a 2.85 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 59 strikeouts to 33 walks in 60 innings, earning six saves.
In Atlanta, he threw 3.2 innings over three appearances, giving him a 12.27 ERA, but those numbers are a bit misleading. He pitched two scoreless innings against the Cubs in his big league debut, and a third of an inning without giving up and walking against the Mariners in his second outing — though he did walk a batter. It was his third appearance against the Mariners the next day, where he gave up five runs in an inning and a third, making his big league numbers look a bit on the ugly side on a short sample size.
Munoz was excellent in Columbus, solid in Gwinnett and had some positive moments in Atlanta. He’s done a good job of getting out of the bullpen, even if some of it came after he got into trouble first.
Commando wasn’t Munoz’s strong suit this year. He walked 5.0 batters per nine innings in the minors, followed by five in three and two-thirds innings with the Braves. He will definitely have to clean that up a bit to succeed at the big league level.
Outlook for 2026
Munoz will likely open the 2026 season in Gwinnett and be an additional piece that goes up and down with the Braves throughout the season if he can make progress with command. So far in the Dominican Winter League, he has posted a 0.93 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 14 strikeouts after walking just two in 9.2 innings of work. If that’s a sign of growth at his command, he could be a valuable piece for the Braves next year.
